Myth 3: Solidarity unions are a 24/7, 365 days a year fight against the boss

Solidarity unions do fight - because they seek to meet members' needs in full. But it's not at all true that the fight is non-stop.

Solidarity unions "reserve" the right to take action at any times - like when conditions are favorable or defensive actions are required. That's not the same as a non-stop fight. Rhythm, rituals, and rest are vital in solidarity unionism, they're just not as fixed as in the traditional union cycle.

Solidarity unions push to win big picture gains from time to time (could be a 1 year, 2 years, etc) and in the meantime just take on the smaller issues that arise in between. They bake in plenty of time for repose in between major struggles with employers.

Literally the best 'wellness' advice is form a union.

We work towards a labor movement where workers can strike together across a company, an industry, and a city.

The federal Taft-Hartley law does not prohibit such strikes so long as we press demands against our own employers and not just make class-wide demands.

(Real) unions are independent of employers. To be independent of employers, you need to not be funded by them.

Basic but important!

Organize everywhere! Yes please, definitely.

It's a good slogan. But to build a sustainable union that fully meet your needs and expresses your values takes more: a complete union model.

Workers designing and testing our own - at our jobs and in our industries - is one of our hallmarks.

Every SUN union campaign is supported by working groups across the full spectrum of building a union. An organizers working group, a strategic research group, union model design, and more.

The groups are made up of members across SUN, from very experienced ones to folks who have recently learned.

We don't shy away from saying explicitly that capitalism is at the root of so much that harms us — on and off the job.

Unions and the labor movement put themselves in a strait-jacket and blindfold when they stop short.

Second myth: Solidarity unions have no engagement with the State.

What's real is that solidarity unions are not *dependent" on the government.

In sum, solidarity unions don't depend on the State and they engage critically with it. History has shown that depending on any elite institution doesn't work out for workers long-term. But where a state engagement makes sense, solidarity unions engage.

Solidarity unions - again not as a primary strategy - will engage if and when it makes sense with politicians and regulators to support the direct action strategy at center.

Solidarity unions are entitled to the same rights as traditional unions and have to engage the state to meet the same responsibilities, like financial transparency requirements.

However, for example, solidarity unions file legal actions against employers, albeit as a side tactic.
