๐จ Launched: State of Wildfires Report 2024-25
The Americas felt the harsh reality of what it means to live on a more fire-prone planet, with extreme #wildfire episodes made 2-3 times more likely by #climate change.

An Unusual Sight Over Canadaโs Arctic: Wildfire Smoke
โWe have no need for air-conditioning, and so we donโt have filtration in the homes for smoke.โ
Project Lead Sue Natali and Sr. Arctic Lead Edward Alexander spoke to the New York Times about how the presence of smoke in northern communities is a growing cause for concern. #Canada #Arctic

Fire Season Is Starting Earlier Thanks to Climate Change, New Study Finds
Study co-authored by a UC Santa Barbara professor sheds light on timing, size, and speed of recent wildfires, including the Gifford Fire.
โThe amount of spring rain is one of the best indicators of when youโll hit the more severe part of the fire season,โ Max Moritz @ucanr.edu said. โBut the warming trend still plays a role because... plants are drying faster than in the past.โ

New in JGR: Atmospheres: Plume Dynamics Drive Extreme Long-Range Spotting During California's Dixie Fire
by Lareau 2025
A new study in JGR: Atmospheres reveals that extreme long-range fire spotting occurred during California's Dixie Fire in August 2021, with fires igniting more than 16 kilometers from the source fire.๐ฅ

It's official. 2025 is now the third worst wildfire year on record in Canada. A study from 2018 examining fire-regime changes in Canada over the prior 57 years showed the fire season had been starting approximately one week earlier and ending one week later. Probably longer now.

It is that time of the year when satellite monitoring of fires and #smoke in S. America has to be more dedicated.
Fires have been going already for a while (since May particularly in N. Argentina and Paraguay and increasing north with time) but none have been v. intense or putting much smoke.
