🔥 Emissions from Spain and Portugal #wildfires so far this year account for three quarters of 2025 total fire emissions for the European Union + United Kingdom based on #CopernicusAtmosphere data. As of 25 August, EU+UK emissions are the highest annual total in the GFAS dataset going back to 2003.

Fire Season Is Starting Earlier Thanks to Climate Change, New Study Finds Study co-authored by a UC Santa Barbara professor sheds light on timing, size, and speed of recent wildfires, including the Gifford Fire.

“The amount of spring rain is one of the best indicators of when you’ll hit the more severe part of the fire season,” Max Moritz @ucanr.edu said. “But the warming trend still plays a role because... plants are drying faster than in the past.”

The EUBURN-SILEX campaign has just ended after a dozen flights over 🇫🇷 fires and 🇨🇦 plumes transported over the 🇫🇷 country. A comprehensive database was acquired using a set of innovative ✈️ in-situ and remote sensing instruments. Next phase is the postprocessing of the database acquired.

Wildfires are a source of carbon and they can reduce the carbon sink from the forest. Cumulative Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE) shows a big drop in 2011 Day 138 due to wildfire smoke.

We got an exceedingly rare view of #pyrocumulus as they were forming above the fire. Scientists are studying the composition and physical properties of smoke to better understand its meteorological and climate impacts.

It's official. 2025 is now the third worst wildfire year on record in Canada. A study from 2018 examining fire-regime changes in Canada over the prior 57 years showed the fire season had been starting approximately one week earlier and ending one week later. Probably longer now.

Is that wildfire smoke plume hazardous? New satellite tech can map smoke plumes in 3D for better air quality alerts at neighborhood scale As wildfire smoke becomes a frequent summer hazard across large parts of the US, knowing the risk at the neighborhood scale matters for human health.

It is that time of the year when satellite monitoring of fires and #smoke in S. America has to be more dedicated.
Fires have been going already for a while (since May particularly in N. Argentina and Paraguay and increasing north with time) but none have been v. intense or putting much smoke.
