Winter break has featured some course prep and writing, but also lots of baking, reading, painting, and snowy walks. Feeling ready(ish) for the spring semester.

It's never too late to acquire new skills. For example, today I learned that I've become really good (too good even) at grinding my teeth. Off to a great start, 2025 🥂

Just received a letter notifying me that my old insurance policy denied coverage for a routine preventative care visit over the summer and the insurance company is (drumroll please)... United Healthcare.

I get the spirit behind the "happy holidays!" emails. But truly the best holiday gift these univerisities and conference organizations can give us is fewer emails to clear out of our inboxes when we get back from break.

My first semester as Dr. Troy is complete! Taught a lot on distilling complex environmental topics for a general audience, found a good rhythm of teaching and research, met new colleagues across campus, made progress in my quest to find the best almond croissants and seasonal lattes in town.

Bluesky has been such a nice platform to connect with colleagues outside of Twitter. But an unexpected joy has been finding some of my favorite fiction authors here! Between the recommendations they post and their new books coming out, my 2025 to-read list is getting pretty long.
