ALEX BRUMMER: Buyout grocers crushed by debt anvil Private equity deals left both grocers weighed down with a monstrous amount of debt and unable to compete with rivals.

Private equity curse

UK grocers Asda and Morrisons crushed by debt anvil.

Asset-stripping to pay for debt and PE profits.

Staff cuts, low investment, market share struggles.

PE has devoured high street, care homes, vets, healthcare.

Govts subsidize PE by giving tax relief on interest payments.

How Spain put up wealth taxes - without chasing away the billionaires Amid calls for Rachel Reeves to bring in a new levy for the super-rich, Madrid offers lessons for policymakers

How Spain put up wealth taxes - without chasing away the billionaires.

Yet the 'don't tax the rich' brigade constantly scare people.

Wealth tax isn't just about revenued. It reduces inequalities, capacity of the rich to bribe, pollute, hijack democracy, hold governments to ransom.

Oh wow, this feels a bit on the nose.

Sad to read.

Hopefully we can turn this tide as a society. ๐Ÿคž

The question isโ€ฆ who is bond?

I can only assume weโ€™ll need someone with the following skills:
- sky diving
- motorcycle racing
- fast cameraman sailing

Itโ€™s has to be the Hard man of Brexit.

Baker, Steve Baker.

Not sure about this take.

Labour are doing some good things. Changes happens slowly.

Donโ€™t forget who actually did the harm vs. Who is charged with trying to fix it.

Labour might not be perfect, but theyโ€™re not driving to Barnard Castle to test their eyes, or redecorating Downing Street!

Iโ€™m not sure the UK is a rich country.

I think some very rich people live here though.

A rich country is one that owns its services (housing, health, water, power, transport), supported by its population & works together to continually improve standards.

The UK sold everything and has no money.

Fantastic thread.

Needs calling out at a national level.

Opposition governments shouldnโ€™t be allowed to deceive the public like this.

100% the biggest issue facing society.

Enforce identity verification, real photos (no avatars) and your real name is also on display.

Failure to comply sees platforms blacklisted as per Trump and TikTok.

Hit the platforms in the revenue streams.

Hit the racists with accountability.

There is some really good stuff happening beneath the rubbish in the papers and on twitter.

Needs to be shouted about more.

Apologises, my point wasnโ€™t super clear. I was referring to Chris Philp. What else can he attack the previous government were just awful.

I do think Labour could be doing way more to clear this divisive subject upโ€ฆ but if/when they do theyโ€™ll then have to deal with the real problems!

The biggest crime in the UK is fraud. I assume thatโ€™s whatโ€™s heโ€™s talking about?

All the expats, tax dodgers, off shore accounts, shell companies, landlords, that have avoided paying their fair share or are taking funding that grey shouldnโ€™t have.

Small boat migration represents just 4% of overall migration.

The whole issue is disproportionate and feels like a distraction from everything else that is broken - water, rail, roads, councils, education healthcareโ€ฆ I could go on.

If this was about how people got here weโ€™d open legal ways.

The government will tax the middle class out of existence instead of trying to tax the vast wealth of the very rich.

Rachel Reeves needs to put up taxes to cover ยฃ40bn deficit, thinktank says NIESR suggests a rise of 5p in the pound on basic and higher rate of income tax would fill the budget gap

There is a ยฃ40bn tax hole and govt must hike taxes, say headlines.

None said that HMRC didn't collect ยฃ46.8bn last yr. 40% (ยฃ18.6bn) relates to corporations. ยฃ500bn since 2010.

NAO says wealthy are dodging taxes. Corporations shift profits to dodge taxes.

Why hit the little people?

Why is no one in the American media challenging him on this or at the very least asking him to explain how the tariffs work.

From the outside it looks like everyone knows that theyโ€™re being exploited and the wealthy are taking the spoils - yet theyโ€™re somehow passive about it all. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Why would the banking England cut inflation during a period of inflation?

When poor and middle class people canโ€™t afford to live, you have to make borrowing cheap to ease the pain.

If you donโ€™t do this then regular people feel the squeeze and our attention turns to those with all the money.

Totally agree.

I think the government wants to avoid Hokey Cokey politics, with the opposite immediately offering to take the country back out of any agreements.

I suspect it will have to get so bad that no one in the UK will want to remain isolated, but thatโ€™s still some way off.
