I chose not to change my last name when I got married but, after my daughters were born, I changed it to match theirs; an act of claiming them as mine... my only bio relatives.

When I was little, my adoptive mom said my birth mother named me Margaret. As a kid, I had complicated/confused feelings about it. AM's name is Maggie so why change my name? I realise now the change was an act of ownership & erasure. And the complicated emotions were anger, loss and grief. 🥚

i think it's time to note that ICE did not pioneer child taking; that it's not a new atrocity being visited upon the vulnerable; that "child welfare" agencies routinely use it to police families in crisis; that good progressive people enter the "foster-to-adopt pipeline" to benefit from it. 🥚

I'm still alive. Abuses happened but APs were not the primary perpetrators; they did fail to prevent thru providing a safe home. Unlike @jerseycraig.bsky.social 's adoptee friend, I'm not 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 & the resulting Mental Health challenges have seriously impacted my 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 as an adult. 🥚

🥚 In yesterday's tomfoolery (buying infants&children as a triumph over homophobia) I was told, "Sorry your adoption was horrendous". Interestingly, my adoption had best possible outcomes given an infant w/ unresolved trauma/motherloss, was raised by adoptive mother w/ unresolved infertility trauma.

In many jurisdictions it's illegal to seperate puppies from mothers before 8 weeks. Yet adoptees can be separated in the delivery room? It's trauma. It breaks people. Children and babies can not consent. But... it's fine?? 🥚
