Old mitochondria regulate niche renewal via α-ketoglutarate metabolism in stem cells - Nature Metabolism Andersson et al. show that intestinal stem cells enriched for old mitochondria are metabolically distinct and have enhanced ability to regenerate the epithelial niche.

Transfer RNA acetylation regulates in vivo mammalian stress signaling An ancient tRNA modification is used by mammalian cells to coordinate protein translation and adaptive signaling.

Excited to share this one! We developed an in vivo model for specific manipulation of transfer RNA acetylation and found it serves as a sentinel modification whose loss causes ribosome stalling and stress signaling. Implications for a genetic disorder and cancer.

A restaurant might be a useful analogy for explaining direct vs indirect costs:

Direct costs pay for the day's ingredients and the wages of the cooks.

Indirect costs pay for the kitchen.

Both are essential, but they need to be managed differently. Which is why they are separate.
