Any article about a particular cop should start with a quote or anecdote from someone they've policed. The most important witness to government power is the one impacted by it.

You could go all the way back to the FIRST great English language history of the Spanish conquests, Prescott's "History of the Conquest of Mexico" (written 1843) and still find a more nuanced and sympathetic portrait of the indigenous peoples of SA. I think any honest historian or critic can hold two things to be true: someone was good by the standards of their profession, their society, their era (which aren't all necessarily the same thing!); and also someone compares better or worse when judged by the standards that critic holds dear

a lot of people are finally waking up to the importance of the 3rd amendment. As a 3A absolutist, i think it should be illegal for soldiers to be quartered anywhere in this country. they should be camping under the open sky at all times. all military bases and barracks are unconstitutional.

Those are definite culprits! I would submit that at least a portion of that apathy & ignorance can be traced to a conscious and successful effort by right wingers to coopt media (both news and entertainment). This feeds potential voters a steady stream of poison that isn't so easy to cure!
