I was so happy to attend the International Association of Bryologists conference in Taiwan last week - Organised by the Taiwan Biodiversity Research Institute and the Taiwan Bryological Society. Interesting presentations, good chat, and some time to get into the mountains to mingle with moss πŸ’š

Biodiversity is the web of life that keeps our planet healthy.

But it’s under threat from pollution, habitat loss, and climate change.

These iconic corals are nearly extinct due to heatwaves: can they be saved? Florida’s primary reef-building corals have been declared β€˜functionally extinct’ β€” prompting a shift in conservation strategies.

πŸͺΈ Florida’s main reef-building corals have been declared functionally extinct after repeated marine heatwaves.

Their collapse is forcing scientists to rethink coral restoration strategies.

The alternatives are much, much worse. We could prioritse putting solar panels in urban areas. Also in Asutralia, we run sheep under solar panels in fields and the sheep enjoy the shade.

This heatmap displays the change in the mean annual count of specimens collected between 2010 and 2019 compared to the reference period of 1970–2009, in 1-degree latitude-longitude grids, across all three taxonomic groups combined (Chordata, Plantae and Arthropoda).

Substantial patterns of decline are seen, particularly apparent across areas with historically high levels of collecting across Australia, North America, Western Europe

We're collecting less than half as many biodiversity specimens as in the 1960s-1980s, at a time when they're more important than ever for climate & ecology science. Natural history collections provide crucial data that no other source can match. Our new paper in Nature Comms: doi.org/10.1038/s414...

Different gov, same dig it up or chop it down mentality.

Between the weakening of Env laws, the nxt major mining boom & gov not caring about our disappearing biodiversity & landscapes, we'll see extinction & loss of significant cultural sites like we haven't seen in generations.

Wetlands sustain life, nurturing biodiversity, building climate resilience and securing our water future.

πŸ’§They are more than natural resources, they are the living foundation of our planet.

Now is the time to protect and restore them for the wellbeing of generations to come.
