Vernal pools are ecologically diverse habitats, formed seasonally from rain or snowmelt. These pools provide a safe breeding environment for certain species of salamanders & frogs. Vernal pools are teeming with life and must be protected from habitat loss, pollution, & a multitude of other threats.

Graphic entitled Outreach, Engagement, and Volunteerism. AWS got its start 35 years ago by bringing people down to the river and getting them to see what a tremendous resource the Anacostia River was, and can be again. We continue this tradition with adventures that connect people with the living river. We sponsor community events such as our annual β€œBioblitz” that bring people and nature together. Our volunteer programs provide opportunities to learn about the watershed and how to protect and restore it. And we can sure use the help!

Graphic entitled Education. Our award-winning education programs engage thousands of school kids every year, combining a solid natural resources curriculum in the classroom with hands-on experiences in river conservation, helping to identify and train the next generation of river stewards. AWS’s adult education programs equip community leaders and activists with the knowledge they need to take an active role in conservation of the watershed.

Graphic entitled Policy Advocacy. AWS works with local, district, state, and federal governments to advocate for laws, regulations, and policies that prevent pollution, advance climate resilience, and promote river restoration.
Over the years, the Anacostia Watershed Society has fought proposals for inappropriate development, sued polluters to hold them accountable, and worked with legislators to advance pioneering public policy throughout the region.
