Funny how my daughter was dressed like this that day and now we sit with Michigan being her top college choice for Class of 2031. Heading back to Ann Arbor for a second visit this fall. #GoBlue

This is for her. For Bessemer. For the press in the back and the porch light in the front. For everyone who ever needed to be seen and for the rest of us still trying to be worth the work she started.

The building still stands. Her name is in the books. But her legacy is in the work. In the daily choice to show up. In the belief that telling the truth, over and over, is a form of justice.

Grantland Rice was a cousin too the sportswriter who found poetry in a box score. Mildred saw something too. The power of being the one who tells the story. She used it not to make herself famous but to make others seen.

When civil rights students had no place to meet, she gave them the keys to her office. When joy needed space, she gave it the front page. She believed in truth. She believed in community. She believed in work.

The beautiful ones. She ran wedding announcements next to protest coverage, made space for both without apology. Called out businesses that refused to hire Black workers. Refused their ads. Used her ink like a hammer. Built what needed building. Tore down what needed tearing down.

Mildred was my third cousin, twice removed. She was my grandmother’s generation. In 1938, she founded The Omaha Star, the only Black-owned paper in Nebraska. It told the stories that mattered. The hard ones.

This isn’t really a Bluesky kind of post, but I use whatever app I’m on to honor family. To remember why we are where we are. To keep working. Always keep working.
