What a brilliant celebration of panto on this year's Royal Variety Show - led by some of the stars appearing in a panto near you this Christmas!

Hull’s year as City of Culture in 2017 saw nearly 800 new jobs created in the city’s visitor econony and £300 million generated in tourism value as over 6 million visitors came to the city.

Being UK City of Culture would be a brilliant boost for Portsmouth’s economy and thriving cultural community.

I’m delighted to support Portsmouth’s ambition to be named City of Culture 2029, celebrating our long heritage of creativity & cultural excellence

I’m glad that we’ve got a leader in Steve Pitt who champions our city at every opportunity & recognises the huge contribution culture makes to our city.

Labour's attack on ordinary people like you and me are a choice. The reality is clear, you can't tax your way to growth.

But there's an easy solution which will make our country richer.

It's time for the government to work with our neighbours and negotiate a new EU trade deal.

Permanently lower business rates for hospitality and leisure premises could be a lifeline for a struggling sector (struggling more because of the jobs tax from the last budget)

If you're interested, the word culture is only mentioned once in the 152 page budget paper.

It's not all bad news:
🧒🏼 450,000 children lifted out of poverty by removing the 2 child benefit cap, as called for by @charliemurphy.bsky.social in last year's election
🚂 12 month freeze on rail fares
📚 £5,000,000 for secondary school libraries (enough for every school to buy 115 books)

Budget 2025:
💶 Tax rises working people
💰 A raid on pensions, taxing responsible financial planning
🥛 Punishing people for making choices with a widened sugar tax
↘️ Growth forecasts for 2026 onwards slashed
⚖️ 5,000 local councillors cut - an attack on local democracy

Portsmouth Labour Party's Cllr Smyth says on Reform UK's amendment aiming to shut young people out of our democracy: "If councillors look at the detail it doesn't make sense linguistically."

(Which, coincidentally, you could say about everything Reform UK does)

Had a great time at Portsmouth Pride today - and UK Pride 2025 - as my city came together to celebrate love, diversity, and acceptance. Portsmouth is a city in which everyone is welcome - not just today but every day, all year round.

Key point on this: Young people aren't apathetic. They care deeply about the things that are important to them, but politicians, campaigners, and the state need to be better at proactively engaging younger people

Professor Jane Green, Co-Director of the British Election Study, says young people not engaging isn't normal and we should't accept it as such. In the US, young people were seen not to vote because they didn't feel informed enough - which is something all of us need to work on

4% of non-voters in 2024 said the Conservative's anti-democracy voter ID laws. The solution?
1. Scrap it, because the UK's voter fraud numbers have always been low
2. Expand the list of accepted IDs, including IDs used by young people

The 2024 General Election had the lowest turnout since 2001, which Professor Jane Green of the British Election Study says can be expected in elections with a foregone conclusion

John Pullinger, Chair of the @electoralcommission.org.uk, says that the country needs to look at mondernisation, safeguarding, and participation at an IfG panel on how the electoral system needs to change
