What We Search For
As he struggles to cope with the death of a friend, Jason Nark becomes absorbed in the story of the search for Matthew Greene, a climber who disappeared in the Sierra Nevada in 2013.
Today is Survivors of Suicide Loss day, for everyone left behind. I processed the death of my beast friend mostly by writing a lot. It wasnβt always healthy. This piece for The Alpinist took about 8 years.

Last night I was at a bar in NYC and βWhat a fool Believesβ came on.
Five Black women walked in and lost their minds: handβs up, hips moving, in utter joy.
I felt joy.
When it was over I asked them if Michael McDonald was the most soulful white dude.
βOh, heβs the one.β

A Pilgrimage to the Original Viral Cabin: Dick Proennekeβs Alaska Home
The late naturalistβs remote lifestyle has captivated Americansβmyself includedβfor decades. Would a visit to his off-grid wilderness shack live up to its beloved image?
βA cabin is like a dream, a simple place where you can become the best version of yourself. You might whittle a walking stick by the fire or cook bacon on a skillet while your new buddy, a red fox, waits for scraps.β

Vermont Legislator Resigns Over Racist Texts in Republican Group Chat
The G.O.P. officials who participated in a group text chat have faced calls to step down. State Senator Samuel Douglass was the groupβs only elected member.
Samuel Douglass, a Vermont Republican legislator who faced bipartisan condemnation after participating in a long-running group chat that routinely used racist and antisemitic language, said on Friday that he would resign. He was one of a dozen young Republicans who had participated in the texts.

Matt Jacobyβs ice dance partner, Alydia Livingston, was on Flight 5342. Now, the 16-year-old skates in her honor.
Alydia was among 67 people who died when an airliner and a military helicopter collided in Washington. Matt, of Bala Cynwyd, thought of her as a little sister.
Matt Jacoby and Alydia Livingston were one of the best young skating duos in the country.
But in January, tragedy struck, when 28 members of the figure skating community died on Flight 5342.
