This is why we need to develop proper evidence-based policies and force them to endorse them. Our community and the general community of chronic complex illnesses deserve better as simple and basic human rights. This is infuriating @cancovsoc.bsky.social #LongCovid #CovidIsAirborne

Hello, my name is [Your Namel, and I'm a [scientist, researcher, concerned citizen, etc.] from [Your City/State]. I'm calling to urge [Representative/Senator's Namel to support NIH and NSF funding and to immediately reverse the Trump administration's decision to cap NIH indirect costs at 15%.
This decision will cause a massive funding shortfall at research institutions across the country, forcing layoffs, reducing support staff, and jeopardizing critical scientific research. Indirect costs aren't wasteful. They pay for essential infrastructure, maintenance, and support staff to ensure that research can happen. This sudden change undermines years of financial planning and creates a devastating budget crisis overnight.
NIH and NSF funding doesn't just support scientific progressβ they fuel the U.S. economy. Every $1 NIH invests results in $2.46 of economic activity. NIH-funded research has led to significant breakthroughs that improve human health. In 2023 alone, NIH funding supported over 400,000 jobs and generated nearly $93 billion in economic activity. Cutting indirect costs will mean fewer jobs, fewer discoveries, and a weakened global standing in science and innovation.
Please publicly oppose this NIH policy change and work with congress to reverse it. I also ask that [Representative/Senator's Namel support sustained, robust funding for NIH and NSF to protect the future of American scientific research and its economic benefits. Can I count on them to take action?
Thank you for your time and for supporting American research and innovation. I appreciate your leadership on this critical issue.
If you are upset about the devastating cuts to science, remember to call your elected officials and let them know about it.
Regardless of if they are red or blue, supportive of science or not, they all track calls. Calls matter. Do it!

Update: They were removed from our reviewer assignments completely. I'm so sorry to all those graduate students.
Anonymous to protect the identity of the NIH employee I spoke to...I am on study section next month to discuss F awards. We were just instructed to put the F31-Diversity applications on the bottom of our priority list for review because there is a chance we may not be able to review them. My heart is breaking for the grad students and their mentors that put so much work into these just for them to be disqualified and thrown out.
Just in case you thought that removing DEI criteria would mean that everyone is competing equally: NIH is removing grad students from underrepresented backgrounds from the applicant pool altogether. Their applications will not be considered. Other students, not from these backgrounds, will be.

(CNN) β Two top security officials at the US
Agency for International Development were put on administrative leave Saturday night after refusing to allow officials from Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency to access systems at the agency, even after DOGE personnel threatened to call law enforcement, multiple sources familiar told CNN.
According to sources, personnel from the Musk-created office physically tried to access the USAID headquarters in Washington, DC, and were stopped. The DOGE personnel demanded to be let in and threatened to call US Marshals to
be allowed access, two of the sources said.
This is illegal. USAID is an independent agency that is funded by Congress and can not be dissolved by an Executive Order.
