Great article. Hereβs the 5 key steps identified for effective net zero action:
1. Galvanise people (eg by backing policies like school streets)
2. Focus on fairness
3. Make the policy process relatable
4. Give people the chance to listen to and engage with each other
5. Accept some opposition

π¨NEW OUTPUTπ¨
We at @accessnetwork.bsky.social have created a definition of environmental social science!
"Environmental social science (ESS) is the (systematic) study of the interrelationship between three dynamic components: People, the social environment, and the natural (non-human) environment"
What have I learned from co-producing these systems maps?
1) The system of actors engaging in environmental topics is vast
2) There are plenty of opportunities as a result!
3) Systems maps are a really helpful tool to visualise this kind of landscape
4) Co-production is not easy, but so worth it!
These systems maps show groups, organisations and individuals that could be engaged for research, development and innovation, and were co-produced with a range of diverse partners. ESS NEMO was published in July, and here's a picture as a taster:
27.11.2024 14:53 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0A lot of what's discussed stems from my work developing the @accessnetwork.bsky.social kNowledge Exchange Map of Opportunities (ESS NEMO), which you can check out here: accessnetwork.uk/essnemo/
27.11.2024 14:53 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0I outline some key ways in which systems maps can be impactful, including:
1) Increasing research impact
2) Facilitating collaboration
3) Improve networking
4) Enhance awareness of opportunities
5) Broaden understanding of system complexity
6) Provide inspiration for future mapping
Check out my new blog on the Universities Policy Engagement Network (UPEN), where I discuss using systems mapping to enhance our networks, the knowledge exchange we undertake, and the impact we could have.
