It furthers understanding of hunting behaviours and motivations in the Temburong district of Brunei Darussalam, how hunting trends may change over time, & how hunting may interact with infrastructure expansion.

Forgot to post here but I passed my viva on 4th June and am #phdone! From navigating international travel during the pandemic, to hiking through tropical rainforests, to data analysis back at my desk in Newcastle it's been a huge adventure. Thanks to my supervisors and everyone who supported me!

Under the Canopy - celebrating 30 years of research in Brunei To commemorate 30 years of research, the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre has released a book with contributions from Newcastle University researchers.

Collaborated with some @newcastleuni.bsky.social colleagues on a book chapter about fieldwork in Brunei, and wrote a blog post about it - check it out here!:

The Bornean ground cuckoo has a cool association with bearded pigs. The birds follow the pigs which upturn earth allowing the birds to better forage for invertebrates (image: Ulmar Grafe).

Fun fact: these birds have also been described as "unpalatable and smelly" ๐Ÿ˜…

This species had not been recorded in Temburong, my study region, since 1986! Local collaborators from Universiti Brunei Darussalam and I teamed up to write an article published in BirdingAsia summarising 14 new Bruneian records from 2020 - 2022, the first in the country since 2010.

Camera trap image of a Bornean ground cuckoo, a large (60 cm) bird, with a purple-glossed black head, a green mantle and back with purple gloss and coppery-red reflections, and unbarred coppery-violet wings and tail. It has barred white-and-black underparts and an area of green bare skin around the eyes and bill.

โœจRare bird sightingโœจ Finally talking about a cool finding from my fieldwork back in 2022! While I was aiming to record mammals in Brunei, I also captured some images of the very rare and elusive Bornean ground cuckoo (Carpococcyx radiceus).

Hi, just moved over here from the other place (๐Ÿฆ) I'm in the final year of my PhD "Biodiversity responses to infrastructure expansion and hunting in Brunei Darussalam". This has been mainly working with camera trap data I collected in Brunei's rainforests in 2022.
