What Our Relationship With Cats Reveals About Ourselves
One fantasy that comes up again and again: I wish cats ruled the world. When we imagine this alternate reality, all our favorite projections blur together in a vague impression of what might be—a …
“I do not think love comes easily to me—love for people, that is. For cats, who have been accused of loving back too little or not at all, it is a different story.” Rebecca van Laer on what humans can learn from our relationships with cats.

Picture of the writtend account claiming to be Ottessa Moshfegh. There is only one post from a month ago, and the follow behavior is pretty consistent with impersonation accounts.
Picture of a conversation between myself and the Ottessa Moshfegh impersonator where I ask them to reply to the email I sent today if they want to confirm they are really her.
Hey friends and mutuals: writtend.bsky is almost certainly not Ottessa Moshfegh’s Bluesky account. She states very clearly on her s*bstack about page that she doesn’t use social media. And this is pretty textbook impersonation vibes. I’ve reported the account, please do the same.

Hand holding up a copy of Rebecca van Laer's book 'Cat' in front of foliage seen through a window.
Shelf containing the Bloomsbury Object Lessons series, all with black spines and colourful titles. Rebecca van Laer's CAT is facing out to the camera.
Rebecca van Laer's CAT held in front of a triple window facing trees from above. The book cover shoes a pensive green eyed white cat.
Can't possibly recommend Rebecca van Laer's CAT enough, and so thrilled to reread now I've grabbed myself a hard copy from the Gower St Waterstones. Cat people unite -- this is such a smart, sensitive, and thoughtful book. Read it!!

The Publishing Industry Has a Gambling Problem | The Walrus
Companies keep betting on the next bestseller. Literature is poorer for it
I spent the summer reporting this essay on why it seems harder than ever to sell a book right now—especially if it isn't a debut and comes with the dreaded "sales track." I'm grateful to the writers, agents, editors, publishers & experts who spoke to me for this piece: thewalrus.ca/the-publishi...

Apart from being really moving in the tale it tells, this story has something soooo satisfying about it. The language just tickles my brain like some kind of magical tactile thing. And what a masterclass of a final sentence.

I'd be grateful if you can send links for flash stories where climate change plays a role. I'd like my students to write these kinds of stories for an assignment, but I don't have many models. Thanks!
