Resources to Better Understand the Mahmoud v. Taylor SCOTUS Decision: Book Censorship News, August 15, 2025
What does the Supreme Court's ruling on Mahmoud v. Taylor mean for the future of inclusive classroom books and lessons?
Resources to better understand what the SCOTUS decision on Mahmoud v. Taylor actually means. You're going to see a lot of compliance in advance and a lot of quiet censorship, even though that's not what this case or ruling say need to happen.

Do not mess with librarians. The inner strength required to meticulously care for history's greatest works of literature and then just let total strangers borrow them willy-nilly is Jedi level stuff.

Majority of attempts to ban books in US come from organised groups, not parents
Last year 72% of demands to censor books were initiated by pressure groups and government entities; with just 16% of ban attempts made by parents
This is exactly why we need to be organized in our defense of the freedom to read. The book banners are organized & we'll funded. But they are also unpopular. Our numbers can beat their money

An illustrated poster showing a diverse group of people standing together. The group includes individuals of different ages, races, cultures, body types, genders, and abilities. Some wear cultural or religious clothing, one person is in a wheelchair, and others have various hairstyles and expressions. Above the group, in large black handwritten-style text, it says: โNormalize caring about people who are different than you.โ The image promotes inclusivity, empathy, and acceptance of diversity.
Normalize caring about people who are different than you. Not just tolerate. Not just accept. Care.
It costs nothing to show compassion, and it builds a world where we all belong.

Letโs make books handout for kids, detailing various roles in making books; author, illustrator, editor, designer, marketing/publicity, librarians/booksellers/teachers and finally readers.
Two worksheets, โbe a writerโ with a writing mad lib, and โbe an illustratorโ with some drawing prompts.
Two more worksheets, โbe an editorโ with editorial marks to practice on some editable sentences, and โbe a cover designerโ with four books needing covers.
Two final handouts: โbe a librarian, bookseller or teacherโ with six kids and six books to match, and โbe a readerโ with preferences in genre and types of books to narrow your reading preferences to help find more books to enjoy.
Here is a handout I made for my kidโs class last week, when I went in to talk to them about making books. I Frankensteined together a bunch of art I already had to make it, and filled other stuff in. But it was a big hit, so Iโm sharing it here in case you know any kids interested in making books!

Bringing Tabletop Role-Playing Games to the Library
Table top role-playing games can be popular programming for all ages in school and public libraries.
The first time I played a role-playing game, I had no idea what to expect. I was in college and Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) was something Iโd vaguely heard about.
Iโm happy to report that more than 30 years later, TTRPGsโtabletop role-playing games,โare having a moment...
