I have had some positive feedback from my webinar last night on badger field signs, which raised an amazing ยฃ1000 for the @badgertrust.bsky.social charity. Iโ€™m so pleased as a charity close to my heart and they do some amazing work for #Badgers #Brocktober

Happy Mabon. #mabon is the pagan festival marking the autumn equinox, a time of balance when day and night are equal, symbolizing gratitude, harvest, and the transition from the abundance of summer into the darker half of the year.

Happy World Otter Day

Otters are great indicators of water quality. They require well-connected wetlands, lochs, reedbeds and good fish, mammal, bird and amphibian populations to survive - conditions that are sadly declining.

๐Ÿ“ท I took on the Isle of Mull.

Had a lovely day at the Badger Trust AGM. Wonderful to see the crime fact sheets launched, that I have been part of developing with the charity. Also it was a pleasure being asked to deliver a presentation on technology in badger work.

Otter signs. There were making a comeback but in some areas they are still hard to spot and the state of the pollution in rivers and waterways from intensive agriculture, slurry, maize, chicken muck and then the water companies pumping effluent in doesnโ€™t help. Come on letโ€™s clean up ๐Ÿ’ฆ.

They scavenge on carrion too.

Brownโ€™s move to the lower climbs seeking snow-free, vegetated areas, then on to clam searching for some and then berries.

Very resourceful big bears.

Someone was asking me about bears and wake up from hibernation. First male grizzly bears typically emerge from their dens in April, followed by females next month, their first thought is of food this consists of protein-rich sedge grasses found abundantly in the riparian areas and estuaries.

Rather than me telling you what this field sign is why not have a little quiz ๐Ÿค” there are no prizes sorry.

So itโ€™s formed (clue) by a land mammal that is known for thier turn of speed.

She can occasionally move them, this is a survival and instinctive trait , sometimes caused by fear of predation (infanticide even), typically by red fox or disturbance by man/dogs, or it can be moving them to a clean part of the sett to avoid a build-up of parasites.

Newborn cubs are dependant on the sow badger for the first few months of their lives. Until they come above ground in mid-April onwards and start adventures, they are underground with mum.

Mum moved her cubs.

She does this as seen here by gently scruffing and carrying them in her mouth.

This customer called us in for advice and a survey, he is happy with the badgers living as his downstairs lodgers which is great. He will monitor to make sure no structural damage occurs, if so then we can advise further
