This protocol applies subnormothermic machine perfusion to maintain and recondition whole eyes ex vivo, moving beyond static cold storage that poorly serves the eye's highly metabolic neural structures. (3/4)

Following the first human whole eye transplant, one of the biggest challenges is preserving the retina and optic nerve, which deteriorate within minutes using conventional methods. (2/4)
