It felt like a daunting task to get the message out to that many people and organise an event so large but we had great attendance and feedback which was really encouraging!

What is your biggest achievement while doing your PhD?

My biggest achievement so far is probably in my role as a PGR rep. We decided to organise a cross-school event for all of the PGR students within MVLS to share their research in an informal way, with pizza of course!

We all know that lab work has a tendency to take longer than expected so it’s easy to feel de-railed when things go wrong but it’s always good to take a step back and look at the bigger picture and then it doesn’t feel so bad!

What advice would you give yourself before you started your PhD?

I think the advice I’d give myself (or anyone at the start of a PhD!) is to have realistic expectations of how much you can get done in a week!

What does a typical week look like for you?

A typical week will vary based on what experiments I have running but will normally have a mix of long whole-day experiments, shorter jobs to do in the lab like looking after cells, and desk work in the office such as analysing data or writing.

Specifically, I am interested in whether small signalling particles called extracellular vesicles (or EVs) could be having a role in causing some of this damage, initially focusing on the blood vessels and heart.

Can you please explain your project?

My PhD project is looking at the impacts of stroke on other organs of the body. We know that as well as brain injury, stroke survivors can have complications in a number of other organs and are interested in exploring some of these effects further.

πŸ§ͺ Great to welcome the BHF supporters to our labs today!

They got a behind-the-scenes look at our research, guided by three amazing scientists β€” all current or former BHF 4-Year PhD Programme students.

Always a pleasure to share the impact of their support ❀️

Using state of the art β€˜DNA encoded chemistry' approaches we have identified new drugs to treat heart failure, which are now being refined and developed. Using a protein discovered in the immune system of a llama we have discovered a new way to suppress lethal cardiac arrhythmias. (3/4)

We take things apart, find out how they work, and use this information to fix things when they go wrong. Current projects are focussed on finding new ways to treat heart failure by fixing mechanical and electrical defects in the individual cells of the heart. (2/4)

This month is Heart Month! Professor Will Fuller explains what his research is about.

Will Fuller’s research group works on cellular and molecular mechanisms that control normal physiology in the heart, and how these things stop working properly to cause disease. (1/4)
