The misinformation and outright lying in politics comes at least as much from certain politicians outside government, sections of the media and a wide range of social media users. Restricting this law to ministers would give the impression that they are less honest than others, which is untrue.

The fib that “they’re all the same”, as well as being obviously untrue, serves only to help the worst politicians. Voters stop bothering to distinguish the clearly venal and mendacious (Farage, Johnson) from ordinarily flawed human beings doing their best. Result: we have more of the worst.
