We can't wait to see acorns shooting up in reforested areas here in CA... we'll be working not against rhododendron, but against the deforestation caused by Big Ag. ๐ฐ #acornisfood

Diagram showing the depth and size of native Californian Oak tree root systems as compared to domesticated Almond and Pistachio.
People are sometimes confused about how oaks can thrive with no irrigation in a climate where almond orchards are dying. The answer is simple - look at the roots! Not only that, they build rich deep topsoil and support more than 6,000 other species. #NativePlants #Sustainability #EatAcorn
19.01.2025 01:01 โ ๐ 18 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0There's a huge amount of misinformation on social media about the #LAFires, but the causes are actually well documented.
Our CMO (who grew up in a neighborhood that burned) weighs in: www.manzanitacooperative.com/musings/fire...
That's true to some degree, though as consumers it's hard when there are no good options or those good options are not affordable. That's a big part of what our cooperative is working on, actually - disrupting climate-destroying food systems to provide an alternative.
16.01.2025 19:57 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0California's Oak forests sequester ~80 tons of #carbon per acre while supporting massive #biodiversity. Preserving - and replanting - them is one of the most powerful things we can do to fight #climatechange. Our new white paper goes into detail. www.manzanitacooperative.com/musings/oak-...
16.01.2025 18:11 โ ๐ 8 ๐ 5 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0If you know anyone investing in those solutions (or anyone reading this does), we're beginning a seed round to launch California's first modern factory processing acorn into food at scale.
Agroforestry based on Acorn can drive reforestation, rebuild topsoil, sequester carbon, and restore habitat.
Food systems that degrade topsoil as a precondition of their existence absolutely do emit carbon. It's not just what's consumed, its how it's produced and the entire framework of industry built around it.
