Happy St. Patrick's Day! Fun fact: the Celtic Tree of Life (Crann Bethadh) is an oak tree, representing strength, resilience, and the hope. The Celts revered this tree; The name of Celtic priests, Druids, derives in part from the root โ€œdruโ€ which means oak.

Adobe is great for fire and climate. It can be problematic in earthquakes, but there are ways to reinforce it. Earth-based building has a lot of advantages and there's a whole movement around those techniques.

Not just where to build, but what to plant. The non-native grasses and plants brought by the Spaniards are a prevailing cause of these kinds of fires. Our L.A. native CMO wrote a piece on this: www.manzanitacooperative.com/musings/fire...

People are sometimes confused about how oaks can thrive with no irrigation in a climate where almond orchards are dying. The answer is simple - look at the roots! Not only that, they build rich deep topsoil and support more than 6,000 other species. #NativePlants #Sustainability #EatAcorn

That's true to some degree, though as consumers it's hard when there are no good options or those good options are not affordable. That's a big part of what our cooperative is working on, actually - disrupting climate-destroying food systems to provide an alternative.

If you know anyone investing in those solutions (or anyone reading this does), we're beginning a seed round to launch California's first modern factory processing acorn into food at scale.

Agroforestry based on Acorn can drive reforestation, rebuild topsoil, sequester carbon, and restore habitat.

Food systems that degrade topsoil as a precondition of their existence absolutely do emit carbon. It's not just what's consumed, its how it's produced and the entire framework of industry built around it.
