It's not what you, little Joe and Jane Citizen, are doing that's the problem. We can prove that with models.

Internal Agency Memo Calls for Political Reviews of Solar, Wind Projects The widely circulating document lists more than 68 activities newly subject to upper-level review.

According to an as-yet-unreleased memo, the Department of the Interior will now subject effectively all new solar and wind project approvals to political review.

In addition, returns hurt the used-bookstore sector (and libraries). If the way to get rid of a book and also recoup some money is to resell it, that's actually great! We should support used bookstores. They make books available to more people, including poorer and more frugal readers. It's win-win.

Regarding returns, I think we should stop accepting them anyway. There are horror stories of indie writers being bankrupted by return costs from IngramSpark from wholesale-bulk purchases that got sent back. One in particular involved a charge of $60,000 to a writer from such a bulk return.

I am running an experiment: What happens if you IGNORE the advice?

I set the wholesale discount at the lowest allowed % and disabled returns. Yes, this means bookstores won't buy it in bulk. But they won't anyway. Indie books sell on demand.

This means I can sell it at $22.99 and get a royalty.

IngramSpark has a lot of complaints, to put it mildly. And it's true that, if you are indie and you follow its default recommendations, it's hard to see how you'll sell many hardcover books.

55% wholesale discount basically means you have to ask $30 USD. Ouch.

And then there are the return issues.

Now I am releasing a hardcover edition. It'll come out on August 1. I am using IngramSpark for this, because the only KDP hardcover option is a cover pasted onto the board. No dust jacket. I wanted a dust jacket. That LOOKS like a novel. KDP's option would be better for a large-print edition.

The Amazon paperback is notably cheaper (currently $12.99 USD there, whereas I have it priced at $16.99 in the d2d distro network). It's sold a lot better.

I haven't had any complaints about print quality from either source, so I have to give Amazon the W here for price. I hate that, but so it is.

🧵For my books, I have now tried several services. I compile my own ebooks, because I'm a LibreOffice/calibre/Sigil superuser, so this thread is about the printing services.

I've got THE INHERITORS printing as a paperback from both draft2digital and KDP. It's identical and I own the ISBN, so I can.

Prime Week beat the 💩 out of my sales rank temporarily because I cannot justify blowing $100 a day on advertising, but the book went high enough in the Hard Sci-Fi category (which I expect to happen again during a normal period)--and there has been enough local interest--that I decided to do it!

They realize that, in public-facing products, safety takes precedence over rigid scientific accuracy. That's what reanalyses after the fact are for. In the heat of the moment, SAFETY FIRST.

IMO this principle applies as well when the NWS itself is under political threat.

This is why, in official forecast products disseminated to the public, a warning forecaster may use stronger language than the meteorological situation warrants, if it's about safety.

It's why the NHC may keep a landfalling hurricane at Category 5 when the data don't really support it anymore.

This goes back to a point I have been trying in vain to make.

AUDIENCE MATTERS.

We SHOULD show scientific integrity in official scientific products.

But for POLITICS? You want to bring strict numerical honesty into THAT? You really think being rigidly "correct" will get politicos on your side?

Hey, meteorology Bluesky: For the past day and a half, many of you've called for BLOCKS of liberal accounts for "spreading misinformation." Insisted that the cuts made no difference.

I.e., THAT THE NWS DIDN'T NEED THOSE VACANCIES FILLED.

That is how I SAID it would be taken, and I was right.

If you are explaining and defending yourself, you are LOSING THE NARRATIVE.

GO ON OFFENSE. THEY forced the cuts. Put THEM on the defensive. It does not bloody well matter if it's strictly provably true about the cuts. SAY IT ANYWAY, FOR GOD'S SAKE! And then say it again. We're at war. Act like it!

"Did they degrade forecasts?" is a scientific question that'll take time to answer, and that process must be honest.

But in the POLITICAL world we live in, setting a narrative is critical. So scream those vacancies and cuts to the rooftops.

Get in a war posture. Our enemies certainly are.
