β€œThe UCP already had all the necessary tools to end this strike without taking such shocking steps. Instead, they picked a fight with teachers and chose the most unconstitutional and antidemocratic path possible to force them back to work.

β€œAlberta’s New Democrats are outraged by the dangerous precedent set today by this government, and all Albertans should be too. Rather than engaging in good-faith negotiations, the UCP introduced back-to-work legislation that directly attacks teachers and their
union. This bill imposes punitive fines, enforces an already rejected contract that fails to address worsening classroom conditions, andβ€”most egregiouslyβ€”invokes the notwithstanding clause against workers.

β€œAlbertans need to be paying attention: their Charter-protected rights are under attack by the UCP. This government has defended QuΓ©bec’s right to use the notwithstanding clause to attack religious minorities. It does not matter whether you are a worker, a
teacher, or student, our democratic rights have been weakened by the actions taken by the UCP this week. Who is next in the UCP’s line of fire?

β€œAlberta’s New Democrats unequivocally condemn the actions of the UCP. We continue to stand up for the rights and freedoms of Albertans and will continue to fight back against this government’s blatant disregard for democracy.”

Now that Alberta's Bill 2 has passed, it operates notwithstanding to Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms for sections 2 and 7 through 15, and the entirety of the Alberta Bill of Rights and the Alberta Human Rights Act.

Here's what it affects vis-Γ -vis the Charter (a thread):

Long lines at the polls a result of additional complexity and paperwork requirements for electors and election workers, despite more staff and 73 more polling stations for 2025 versus 2021.

A question the entire Calgary media will be asking tomorrow

Latest EC figures are showing a major slowdown at the polls throughout the afternoon.

As of 4 p.m., some 89,900 Calgarians had voted at the polls on election day.

Elections Calgary is reporting just 46% of polls were getting voters through 10 minutes or less, matching what has been reported all afternoon by Calgarians having slow waits at the polls.

Oh I agree. I 100% believe that the changes have not made elections more transparent or secure, but just harder to cast a ballot.

Imagine if it wasn’t warm like it is today relatively speaking, and how this would have led to massive numbers of people choosing not to vote.

20.10.2025 23:17 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I think it's pretty clear from the ample evidence of people voting today that there is a problem at the polls.

Lots of questions there as to accuracy of how timing is being counted as well.

So far the biggest delay seems to be from the requirement for workers to check if someone is on the Permanent Electors Register, which was introduced by the UCP for the 2025 municipal elections.

It doesn't actually require people to be on it to vote, but it does add a delay.

20.10.2025 19:47 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 2    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, so far 28,160 voters have cast their ballots on election day.

Elections Calgary is saying that 70% of stations are taking less than 20 minutes per voter to cast a ballot, but that there is some delays at stations with wait times.

We do serve up Google ads to ensure that reporters like me get paidβ€”but sometimes things slip through against the ad policy we’ve selected depending on how honest the advertisers are.

As always, I suggest people report ads they don’t appreciate. It helps you and us out considerably.

Elections Calgary has really been trying to get that message out for the last few days. The switch to hand counting has made the election way more complex and way more costly than the tabulators were.
