That’s true, but it’s also possible to just put it in the notes. I did that once (not bc I was scared of comparison but bc it was just one chapter of several).

Yeah, the only times I was truly annoyed was the couple of times I saw ppl blatantly lift entire very specific sentences/scenes from me. My mind is like a sieve though and I think holding grudges is bad for you, so I don’t even remember the titles or authors of those fics anymore

+ the author was happy, I was happy, the readers were happy. No harm in any of it. I do think that @clarz is onto something when she says it’s bc a lot of ppl are very competitive about fic

I agree! I know I’m DELIGHTED when I love a story and then find more in the same vein! I do wonder where the shame/unwillingness to acknowledge direct inspiration comes from. I was once inspired to write smth by someone else’s story, and I put that in the notes, along with the link to the og fic +

Same, but it for sure doesn’t feel great when you recognize it’s one of yours and it’s not acknowledged anywhere so I do understand the people who get upset about it too.

(Having said that, except for the times when someone literally stole sentences from me word for word, I try to give the benefit of the doubt bc I’ve also once been accused of ripping off a comic I’d never even heard of let alone read)

Very interested to hear everyone’s thoughts on where the line is between inspiration and stealing/plagiarism in fanfic, which is inherently based on playing with tropes and riffing off other media
(Thinking bc a friend of a friend had their idea ripped off and it’s happened to me too a few times)
