28.12.2024 18:19 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0A six-panel cartoon titled "real and implied birds". In the two panels in the top row, there's a rough legged-hawk sailing through the sky, next to a smooth legged hawk, which has smooth human legs. In the second row, there's a great-crested flycatcher looking dapper, next to an ok-crested flycatcher that has just a slightly less nice crest. In the third row, there's a mountain chickadee standing up on stones, next to a valley chickadee peeking out from a dip between stones. In the fourth row, there's a least bittern standing in some reeds, next to a most bittern that is enormous and stomping through a city, with people running in fear, helicopters overhead, and an overturned car on fire.
Another thing I made this year: Real and implied birds.

Underneath is smaller text, "Experiments in code, data analysis & visualisation from the Atlas of Living Australia." The background is green grass with a Southern Brown Tree Frog in the middle, hanging onto the grass. It has a darker brown top and lighter brown underside. The frog's eye is a rich dark yellow, with a black pupil in the shape of an oval, stretching from the left to right side of the eye
An animated scroll through an ALA Labs post, showing code, text and visuals to make a data visualisation in R. The article is on how to make a hexagon map of Australia, where each hexagon is an area of Australia, and each point in the hexagon is positioned and coloured to represent a species.
Examples of dataviz that ALA Labs posts show how to make in R. They are colourful and fun. One of them is even 3D!

14.12.2024 22:16 โ ๐ 57 ๐ 12 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0A side view of a salamander fills the image from left to right. The tail is at the right, the body pointing to the left, but the front third of the sally curves back to the right, with the face angled towards the camera. The overall color of the sally is dark gray with an overlay of very tiny light gray dots. The limbs are the same color, along with streaky blotches of a coppery orange. The tail has the same background color, but also has many irregular blotches, whitish and with some coppery orange hues here and there. The effect makes the tail resemble a lichen-spotted branch. The eyes are large and bulging from the head, and are completely black.
Firschein's Salamander (Pseudoeurycea firscheini) from Veracruz state, Mexico. A male; the fleshy little nubbins at the snout's end are called cirri, and carry pheromones and other chemical signatures to the nostrils, in order to find females and locate rival males. #herps #NaturePhotography ๐ฟ

Look at those Ceropegia ampliata flowers! Yep those are flowers, this shape is typical for this genus. Inside of the tube there're hairs growing upside down, so that once an insect gets in, it has to struggle to get out, during the struggling the flower gets pollinated. #iamabotanist #plantjoy ๐งช๐พ๐ธ

04.12.2024 00:23 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Photo of a still pond, with the far bank at the top third of the photo, filled with bushes and trees. In the middle of the pond is a log, running across the entire width of the photo. Perched on the log are 36 basking turtles, all in a line, most of them facing away from the camera. The photo is taken from distance, but their narrow heads and necks can be seen sticking up from their oval shells. Between the line of turtles and the far bank there is a single turtle basking on a small branch. Perhaps there is no more room on the log, or maybe this single turtle wants some alone time.
