If this government listens to them as actively as they're trying to make happen right now, we may see bespoke raids that otherwise would not have happened, or other actions responsive to their demands.

They're a small, unrepresentative group, yes. But they're savvy, and dangerous because of it.

It'd be one thing if they were just being cynically held up as representative. This administration was always going to highlight a few people saying "this is what Chicagoans really want", whether this group or another. But they're actively trying to wield their influence, trying to shape operations.

After the raid last week in South Shore, that group is now publicly asking DHS to raid other locations of their choosing in the same neighborhood. They may get their wish. They've risen to prominence and influence with anti-immigrant, pro-Trump messages and actions over the last several years.

I fear the damage that will be done at the behest of the specific, tiny, media savvy group that Trump speaks about here - a group who have managed to parlay racist grievances into a large following and get well connected with genuine federal power holders by claiming to speak for a silent majority.

Many people were injured or killed in the course of local unrest because they happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when federal authorities, unbridled in their tactics, drew weapons instead of making arrests.

The president and AG were directly advised by a circle of railroad industry men who made the situation out to be much more chaotic than it was, and strategized with the government to maximize damage to the union and criminalize its leaders, a priority held above public safety itself.

State and local authorities pivoted tactics several times to try to prevent federal intervention, including periods in which they attempted to crack down heavily on protests, inflaming tensions with locals while trying to project allyship at the same time.

And it's not just surface similarities.

Proponents of federal intervention tried to paint the ARU as being the central promoter and coordinator of several small, autonomous violent incidents, and wildly exaggerated the scale of those incidents to the press, to the AG, and to the president.

In addition to that, if you've got lots of extra time on your hands, the original Strike Commission report and its supporting materials are a major source for the bulk of later scholarship about what took place during the strike itself.
