07.10.2025 00:41 β π 11 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0If this government listens to them as actively as they're trying to make happen right now, we may see bespoke raids that otherwise would not have happened, or other actions responsive to their demands.
They're a small, unrepresentative group, yes. But they're savvy, and dangerous because of it.
It'd be one thing if they were just being cynically held up as representative. This administration was always going to highlight a few people saying "this is what Chicagoans really want", whether this group or another. But they're actively trying to wield their influence, trying to shape operations.
06.10.2025 21:48 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0After the raid last week in South Shore, that group is now publicly asking DHS to raid other locations of their choosing in the same neighborhood. They may get their wish. They've risen to prominence and influence with anti-immigrant, pro-Trump messages and actions over the last several years.
06.10.2025 21:42 β π 10 π 0 π¬ 3 π 0I fear the damage that will be done at the behest of the specific, tiny, media savvy group that Trump speaks about here - a group who have managed to parlay racist grievances into a large following and get well connected with genuine federal power holders by claiming to speak for a silent majority.
06.10.2025 21:40 β π 28 π 2 π¬ 4 π 0This remains an excellent album-ender, just a great song.
06.10.2025 21:29 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Def. atty continues his argument, says "violent terrorist organizations" are trying to doxx agents.
This prompts open laughter in the courtroom.
"Well, I think we have a different idea of what's going on in Chicago," Ellis tells the def. atty, who is appearing remotely.
The Format was a great little band. So was fun. during their first album cycle, despite the inescapable megalith they became on their second album cycle
06.10.2025 21:24 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I did not have The Format announcing a new album on my BINGO card for this year, but this is great news for millennials who were sad about Nate Ruess penning a set of self-consciously Billboardcore pop songs in 2011 and then seemingly fucking off forever

The library in Summit, Illinois, is bonkers. ca. 2002. Frye, Gillan, Molinaro, architects.
06.10.2025 16:59 β π 46 π 6 π¬ 2 π 0You know how there's a type of guy who's a regular at a local bar and won't ever stop talking to his favorite bartender or pick up on signals that the bartender is annoyed by him?
Hyde Park has a subgenre of those guys who are all professors emeritus rambling at the counters of local coffee shops.
Yeah, a lot of related legislation happened in the near-immediate aftermath, for good reason.

06.10.2025 03:37 β π 10 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0[the legal environment around troop deployments to states has changed significantly since the Pullman Strike, though - in part *because* of the strike - so this particular history doesn't really offer much useful info for the current situation when it comes to the law and the courts]
06.10.2025 03:36 β π 14 π 1 π¬ 2 π 0I did not know that! I'll have to visit it sometime.
06.10.2025 03:24 β π 4 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Many people were injured or killed in the course of local unrest because they happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when federal authorities, unbridled in their tactics, drew weapons instead of making arrests.
06.10.2025 03:16 β π 14 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0The president and AG were directly advised by a circle of railroad industry men who made the situation out to be much more chaotic than it was, and strategized with the government to maximize damage to the union and criminalize its leaders, a priority held above public safety itself.
06.10.2025 03:15 β π 16 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0State and local authorities pivoted tactics several times to try to prevent federal intervention, including periods in which they attempted to crack down heavily on protests, inflaming tensions with locals while trying to project allyship at the same time.
06.10.2025 03:15 β π 19 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0And it's not just surface similarities.
Proponents of federal intervention tried to paint the ARU as being the central promoter and coordinator of several small, autonomous violent incidents, and wildly exaggerated the scale of those incidents to the press, to the AG, and to the president.
In addition to that, if you've got lots of extra time on your hands, the original Strike Commission report and its supporting materials are a major source for the bulk of later scholarship about what took place during the strike itself.

Almont Lindsey's 1942 history is a good, accessible book version of the leadup, the strike, and the legal fallout.
06.10.2025 03:03 β π 4 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0An old yellowed newspaper clipping reads: Gov. Altgeld has addressed another letter to President Cleveland with regard to the federal troops being massed at Chicago. He declares their presence unnecessary and calculated to incite disorder, and demands their withdrawal. The President insists that he is acting strictly within the law and refuses to recede from his position.
Seriously, though
