It feels like we need a grading system. Alas, this would be a Grade E. It's a jumper, but it doesn't quite fit the core criteria. The colour, pattern, and so forth don't match the Nordic Noir expectations.

As @tristanarbro.bsky.social indicates, this is baseline gamewear for a Cörk Børd GM. You'll receive immediate respect for wearing this at any convention or gaming outlet from 2026 onward. Secure it now before it's snatched by another trendsetter.

Per Mörk Borg, these are predefined optional classes. Nothing is stopping you from creating a suitable character with a homebrew Class. And there are some options to support a different vibe.

Cthulhu Hack has a d66 table in the back of the book, in a section called Connections, that looks to offer an array of potential reasons why the group of investigators have chosen their path in engaging the Mythos—something that, otherwise, wouldn't make sense as a simple hobby or random act.

I was answering the question, without considering your situation.

It's a common issue, especially at conventions, that some players seem determined to be obstructive in respect of their character's reason for engagement.

Re. your game, in general, make the group define motivation in Session 0.

Q. How do we ensure PCs engage with the plot?

A. Ask them to. Tell them to. It needs to be part of the pact and principle when sitting down to play.

If a player isn't down for engaging and finds a basis to query why their character would be involved, they're breaking their side of the deal.

Nope. It's just a plain old death cult. Nothing Kurt Wallander wouldn't be anguished to deal with—the day after he returns from his latest holiday (to somewhere subdued and unrelenting dour).

Oh, it's mainly real. The 'kult is a diversion to that, which can be played up or down as you see fit.
