Advice | How to Prepare for the β€˜Worst Job Market in a Generation’ With hiring on hold in many sectors, what should graduate students, postdocs, and their universities be doing?

Must read: "Every year you stay in adjunct/postdoc is another year you’re losing money. You’re also further behind your peers who moved directly into industry. They’re learning valuable skills and gaining experience which allows them to advance, take on more responsibility, and earn more money"

I think we could figure this out if we had to. But there could be a pause in data access.

I just noticed that NCHAT's @icpsr.bsky.social website has a new disclaimer "This repository is under review for potential modification in compliance with Administration directives." I am not sure what this means, but I wanted to let everyone know.

I just saw that a colleague’s grant on birth outcomes in Black families was terminated yesterday with what appears to be the same statement. The terminations are spreading and it’s chilling.

Pay attention to what's happening to higher ed in Ohio. New legislation - awaiting the Governor's signature - eliminates all DEI activities on campuses; restricts how faculty teach; bans faculty strikes; and restructures the terms and the mission of each institution’s board of trustees.

This award no longer effectuates agency priorities. Research programs based primarily on artificial and non-scientific categories, including amorphous equity objectives, are antithetical to the scientific inquiry, do nothing to expand our knowledge of living systems, provide low returns on investment, and ultimately do not enhance health, lengthen life, or reduce illness. Worse, so-called diversity, equity, and inclusion (β€œDEI”) studies are often used to support unlawful discrimination on the basis of race and other protected characteristics, which harms the health of Americans. Therefore, it is the policy of NIH not to prioritize such research programs.

My federal grants with @wendymanning.bsky.social and Ann Meier were terminated last week. The language from the termination is below. It has been sad as we are being forced to say goodbye to members of our team. We are figuring out next steps. We remain deeply committed to studying all families.
