Many cis people have never examined (or don't believe in examining) their gender.
They just accept it as something that can't be changed.
I firmly believe this is a contributing factor to cis people lashing out at trans people for changing something they don't see as changeable within themselves.

2nd, "no medical consensus on how best to treat" is precisely why it should be a case-by-case basis between doctors, and people - rather than being a matter of cookie cutter state enforcement, especially when you're attempting to force detransition and conversion therapies that are proven harmful.
