Writing misplaced modifiers, the story was ruined by the author.

They seem to work in our minds when we write them, but they don't work in the readers' minds. This is one of the reasons why we all need editors.

@samknight.bsky.social's #writingtips for new authors: Overuse of ellipses, em-dashes, semicolons, colons, or anything really, is worse than not using them at all. Especially if you aren't using them correctly. In fact, some of the most enjoyable stories are made of simple sentences.
