Silica sand is a hot topic right now in Manitoba too.
29.01.2026 02:33 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0We talkinβ bout sand!!! Have to love the versatility of sand.
Here is some interglacial sand overlain by till deposited during the Wisconsinan advance, Churchill River, HBL.
I hate to even give this article a post, but it's here if interested.

If we want to have civilized conversations, then we need portray facts accurately. There are a number of things wrong with the Wpg Sun article today re: the Pandemic. The worst one is using conclusions and stats from a clearly withdrawn article. Do better @winnipegsun.bsky.social.
07.01.2026 20:48 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Nothing better than collecting it and burning it off. Iβll be honest though never knew it was maple syrup day today!
18.12.2025 03:36 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Our new paper is out, in proper format, in CJES today. It's a continuation of our stratigraphic framework development in the southwest HBL, together with Paleo environment data (UofT) and optical dating (UFV).

I made a grave error and bought a β3D puzzleβ rated 4+ for the kids. This horrific creation is impossible. Each piece changes. Whole thing makes me dizzy but we are committed at this point.
14.12.2025 17:51 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I enjoy finding these relatively old literature comments.
13.11.2025 14:43 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I was 4! What a ride.
21.10.2025 03:26 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It definitely piqued my interest to see Clark et al's reconstruction of sea level for the past 4.5 million years, something I first heard about several years ago. However, upon reading it, I am very surprised that this was published. 𧡠1/11

Yes, we get a lot of βis this a meteorite?β inquiries at the survey.
Most often, the rocks are obviously not meteorites.
However today someone strolled in with this material. This is by far the densest material that I have ever held. It puts a typical VMS Ni-Cu ore to shame.
Anyone?
Congratulations to Mr. Mesich who successfully defended his MSc today at UWaterloo. It's been a pleasure serving as your co-supervisor with Dr. Ross.

There was also the large (1 m) holes where trees have completely burned downwards. Not to mention the hollowed out trees. Wildfires are something else.
04.09.2025 17:26 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This also surprised me quite a bit. Was observed all over the area to some degree. May need a βwildfireβ parameter on your Boreal cosmo ages! Hah
04.09.2025 17:25 β π 3 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Sometimes you see the full scope of the chaos, then wonder what type of stories geologist made up when they could only see parts of said story.
03.09.2025 20:19 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0July was the smokiest month on record in Winnipeg with 189 hours of smoke at the Airport. Temperatures were average, but it was much drier than normal.
It was also the driest January to July on record at the Airport with 126mm of precip. Normal is close to 300mm
The relentless 2025 fire season continues to put northern Manitoba communities under siege. Flin Flon, Lynn Lake and Island Lake earlier this summer. Snow Lake and Leaf Rapids right now.
Itβs terrifying to think how bad this is going to get in a warming world. The Boreal is already feeling it.
Itβs a ridiculous letter, I mean the irony is off the charts: ββ¦this worrisome trend can be reversed if proper action is taken.β
They ainβt going to like the fire situation in northern MB right now.
Itβs not just the number, the size of some of the bigger active fires doubled in size today under favourable south winds

This should be unbelievable. But it doesnβt seem like much is these days.
09.07.2025 12:34 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Iβve been keeping an eye on the fire near the Ruttan Mine since we were supposed to be heading there next week. Itβs grown considerably over the past week. This whole area has been detectable within the last 24hrs.
08.07.2025 19:54 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The fire situation in northwest Manitoba is nuts. Hard to comprehend the scale of these blazes. Every red dot is an active fire within the last 1-3 hrs.
Only going to get worse with a balmy 28C and gusts up to 40 km/h tomorrow with more lightning to follow.
Lynn Lake, Leaf Rapids evacuated.
Chatbots β LLMs β do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When theyβre βrightβ itβs because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. Thatβs all.

These Utah Mammoth jerseys are pretty awesome.
I think I may need to run our beer league team so I can make some executive decisions moving forward.
