That changed my life: a cliché, perhaps, but demonstrably true.
I was his only PhD student, I think, and he was instrumental in getting me appointed at York (first in 1985 and again in 1989).

He taught me Econometric Theory at York in my final year of UG degree (Math & Econ) in 1982/83. I still have the lecture notes! He persuaded me to drop a “regular job” offer and go to LSE instead to study the Masters in Math Econ & Econometrics - as he had done in the late 60’s.

Terribly saddened by the death of Les Godfrey (econometrician & Professor Emeritus @EconomicsatYork).
He was a friend, mentor, guide & colleague during my formative academic career. A huge influence on my professional life.

This is not what he said and they know it. Something very disturbing has happened to much of the British press and a fair amount of conservative politics. The extremist Musk tail wagging the formerly mainstream dog.

Six decades later, Star Trek may still be the only franchise based on the ideas that diversity is strength, justice is the measure of civilization, bounty is to be shared, peace is worth the price, and all these things can be achieved.
We need more shows that look ahead and find goodness.
Wow. Here is one to brighten up your morning. The first images of the restored interior of Notre Dame cathedral. Breathtaking. In just five years France did it

This is far too measured and sensible for either Times readers or X, but may go down better here.
