Because I've spent so much time on social media, you guys. I've sold so much of myself to various algorithms. I've exhausted my attention span and my ability to just be fucking bored once in awhile. These days, if I want to read a book, I have to put my phone in the other room and resign myself to the fact that I'll be thinking about it for the first twenty minutes I'm reading—longer, if the book is a demanding read. When I was a little kid, you couldn't part me from my books! And the same is true of so many little pleasures. How many things can you honestly say are as absorbing as that endless scroll of delicious terrible news? There have certainly been times in my life when, for one reason or another, social media was sort of all I had—I was too sick to spend much time out in the world, or too friendless, or too anxious. But I wish that…
