it's not a taking ownership kind of pride, me sending like $60 a year certainly doesn't entitle me to that. it's just been so wonderful to watch some nice Midwestern boys work hard and have it pay off spectacularly. I just think what they've accomplished is so cool!

I've loved Red Letter Media's videos for more than a decade and yeah, I actually do feel proud when I think of what they've built and accomplished.

When a chatbot gets something wrong, itโ€™s not because it made an error. Itโ€™s because on that roll of the dice, it happened to string together a group of words that, when read by a human, represents something false. But it was working entirely as designed. It was supposed to make a sentence & it did.

With the AI Google summaries, people aren't just cherry-picking the failures. The only time it is 100% is when there is an extremely easy and well-known answer to your inquiry. If it's anything you'd actually need to dig to find, it will hallucinate a fake answer basically every time.

Finally: AI cannot do your job, but an AI salesman can 100% convince your boss to fire you and replace you with an AI that can't do your job, and when the bubble bursts, the money-hemorrhaging "foundation models" will be shut off and we'll lose the AI that can't do your job, and you will be long gone, retrained or retired or "discouraged" and out of the labor market, and no one will do your job.

Just spent some time digging through old Maxar/DigitalGlobe blogs to find a reference image and found this incredible capture of Mt Fuji. Incredible.

The satellite was only three degrees above the horizon when it captured this image.

Best glory Iโ€™ve ever seen from a plane! Itโ€™s an optical phenomenon that occurs when light interacts in and around tiny droplets of water in the clouds, in the direction opposite the sun. A newly forming planet minds the gap A planet is seen for the first time in a gap between rings of material around a young star

Astronomy is so weird sometimes. You can't tell how big that object is without some sense of scaleโ€ฆ but it's well over SIXTY BILLION KILOMETERS ACROSS.

And that little dot in the gap? *That's a baby planet bigger than Jupiter siphoning up material to grow.*

When Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi were tasked with creating the first Godzilla film for Toho since Godzilla: Final Wars (2004), they thought back to the disaster of 3.11, and like Ishiro Honda with the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, imbued the monster God with the relevancy of a national tragedy. In the time since its release, the Godzilla of Anno and Higuchi, feels as though he has become a symbol for inevitability in an epochal age of unending catastrophe. Godzilla movies usually begin with quotidian observations: a journalist might be headed to work, a scientist could be running tests, sailors could tie new knots for their boat. Itโ€™s a fair-warning system that allowed the characters to get acquainted with the phenomenon of the arrival of a gigantic monster step-by-step. Thereโ€™s time in many of these movies to drift away from the immediate threat, and plan a course of action, or even ignore the monster entirely for a subplot involving human characters who are soon to be the mercy of the creature. Itโ€™s startling that Shin Godzilla doesnโ€™t begin this way. When the film opens with the Japanese coast guard investigating an abandoned yacht in Tokyo Bay, there is a sense that the apocalypse has already begun, and the characters of the film are forced to catch up with that reality. When the ship explodes it leaves a pool of blood stretching out over the water. A strange, inexplicable image which defies practical science. Prior to the deaths of the coast guard, they observed an ominous note left by the phantom crew. It was a warning and the Gothic resonance of that final message renders this as a Godzilla picture that begins with a startling sense of Revelation that recalls the troublesome nature of watching a Lucio Fulci picture like Zombie Flesh Eaters (1979).

SHIN GODZILLA is currently back in cinemas and you should go watch it. I wrote about how it stands apart from other Godzilla movies, and how its apocalyptic sensations feel troublesome and relevant.

screengrab of a portion of new yorker interview with former simpson's writer john swartzwelder:
Mike Sacks: How much time and attention did you spend on these scripts? Another โ€œSimpsonsโ€ writer once compared your scripts to finely tuned machinesโ€”if the wrong person mucked with them, the whole thing could blow up.
Swartzwelder: All of my time and all of my attention. Itโ€™s the only way I know how to write, darn it. But I do have a trick that makes things easier for me. Since writing is very hard and rewriting is comparatively easy and rather fun, I always write my scripts all the way through as fast as I can, the first day, if possible, putting in crap jokes and pattern dialogueโ€”โ€œHomer, I donโ€™t want you to do that.โ€ โ€œThen I wonโ€™t do it.โ€ Then the next day, when I get up, the scriptโ€™s been written. Itโ€™s lousy, but itโ€™s a script. The hard part is done. Itโ€™s like a crappy little elf has snuck into my office and badly done all my work for me, and then left with a tip of his crappy hat. All I have to do from that point on is fix it. So Iโ€™ve taken a very hard job, writing, and turned it into an easy one, rewriting, overnight. I advise all writers to do their scripts and other writing this way. And be sure to send me a small royalty every time you do it.
