Another story is about secondary school teachers who, when asked, “What do you do?” reply, “I’m a chemist, historian, archaeologist…” But the truth is, they’re primarily teachers 👩‍🏫👨‍🏫. And that’s okay! Being a teacher is amazing. Also saying this with love ❤️.

Sometimes we forget that didactics, whether in natural or social sciences, is part of the social sciences. So, all of us working in didactics are doing social science, whether we like it or not 🤷.

One time, a colleague in natural science education told me, “Social sciences are sciences too, but they don’t do empirical studies.” (WTF?! 😱).

I’m tired of hearing people in natural science education talk about “science education” like it’s the only kind of science. Aren’t social sciences also sciences? Saying this with love ❤️.

When we think of science, we often picture labs 🧪, white lab coats 🥼, and chemistry. That’s pretty normal, but my work has nothing to do with that.

Schools are important spaces for socialization, but others, like the media, have a much stronger influence. This is a well-known fact.

It’s simple: we use both, always in the same order. Your parents decide that order when you are born. It’s not that complicated. :)

It’s frustrating that I must modify how I use my name to fit international norms. The system should adapt to diverse cultural naming conventions, allowing us to use our full names without confusion.

To avoid this, many Spanish-speaking authors resort to using a hyphenated surname (e.g., Castellví-Mata) or simply omit the second surname. I often omit “Mata” for this reason.

In academic contexts, particularly in Anglophone settings, the first surname is often mistaken for a middle name. This leads to frequent misattributions in citations and confusion about authorship.

Today, parents in Spain can legally choose the order of their child’s surnames. Despite this flexibility, many still use the father’s surname first, followed by the mother’s. However, this is changing.

In Spain, people have two surnames: the first from the father and the second from the mother. This tradition reflects both parental lineages. For example, my name: Jordi (first name), Castellví (father’s surname), Mata (mother’s surname).
