Still in disbelief there's an actual following of - and some sort of mainstream press respect - for someone who wrote his "most important works" under the pseudonym of Mencius Moldbug. I mean, at some point cringe itself has to become a measuring stick right

White text on a deep blue background:

The End of Everything (2026)
A novel by M John Harrison

It feels like the end. Government barely functions, the seas are full of new creatures, Europe has been mislaid: yet the exact cause of the catastrophe remains obscure.
Is it an alien invasion? An ecological collapse? Or an unprompted change in the nature of reality?

Phillip Tennent makes a living selling exotic lifeforms washed up from the Channel - until he lands a creature whose shapeshifting properties threaten to destabilise everything he thinks he knows. M John Harrison, acknowledged master of science fiction, unsettles and entertains in this slyly satirical adventure into the limits of human knowledge and mastery.

Sometimes, I think people need reminding that 'No ethical consumption under capitalism' is a critique of capitalism, not ethics.

Would the five invisible people who are gathered round my bed please give me an ex
planation. All the beggars of history would like to know, and all the wealthy murderers
who have no need to fear the dawnโ€™s vouchers, its church bells and ordeals by pinprick.
Let them use whatever language they require. Inner and outer alphabets, everything
applicable. Could they offer please some details, or reason or betrayal. And could they
please, in a thunder of whatever dates and names, just get out.
I think of my friends as blackbirds
screeching from rooftops
murdered by rising rents
Exarchia Kreuzberg Hackney
 we survive
at random. pissed out of our heads
in songs in
squatted bars
there are those you beat to death in prison
with us itโ€™s done with pills and needles
we never sleep we always dream
we wake in the same bed
 with bedbugs
with trackmarks I love my friends
they are wires stretched from city to city
in borrowed dresses and migraines
 interpreters commies thieves
they live in silence. they paint in black
 they invent their language

Ancient Egyptian artistsโ€™s small, naturalistic painting of a standing hippopotamus on a flake of white limestone, dated c. 1479โ€“1425.

The hippo is painted in profile with head lowered and to the right. The body is outlined with black paint and painted brown. The belly, eyes, and ears are painted red. Although the ancient Egyptians were well aware of the danger and destructive power of hippos, this painted hippo has a seemingly friendly face!

Dimensions: H. 10.8 cm (4 1/4 in); W. 12 cm (4 3/4 in); Th. 1.7 cm (11/16 in)

Egyptian artists made practice sketches on flakes of limestone, sometimes for use as templates when transferring an image to the wall of a tomb or a temple. Limestone flakes were readily available because of the constant construction of temples and rock-cut tombs. A number of such sketches were recovered at Deir el-Bahri during the 1922-23 MMA excavations. This painting was acquired by the Met museum in the division of finds.

Bini Adamczak, Yesterday's Tomorrow: On the Loneliness of Communist Specters and the Reconstruction of the Future

Books in 2025:
1. Short and incisive, but a painful read on the failure of the communist movement in the last century. Loved Adamczak's work on communist desire, looking forward to reading more written by her.
