He was raised independently by his Mother, unacknowledged by his father, on social services. When it was time to go to high school, a Mellon family representative found him, paid for his schooling, and wrote him into the family. I recall he briefly discussed this in a 22/23 interview.

In episode 4, they dig into his childhood. At age 13, he spent several wks remanded to a psychiatry division (because of truancy). His psychiatrist was Dr. Renatus Hartogs, who specialized in hypnosis and experimentation w/LSD.

Oh, you've got to listen to it. It's well done and more than just a rehash. Yes. That he was from the get-go a double agent (working for the CIA, etc.).
