Having a robot write irrelevant emails for you sounds great and inconsequential in theory but it’s unsurprising to me how quickly people have moved the goalposts to having the robot write anything for you that would require personality or emotional labor

I feel like every single day I need to post a reminder: if you ask an LLM about itself it DOES NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ITS INNER WORKINGS and WILL NOT TELL YOU ANYTHING ACTUALLY ABOUT ITSELF. It just (as it always does) will make up some plausible sounding answer.

I’m a journalist. I agree with leaving X. That’s why I don’t post there anymore. I don’t agree with ignoring the consequences of X. It is still causing serious and widespread harms.

We can agree to disagree on that part. I think that if you sexually harass someone and then show up to their deposition, you’re continuing to leverage your power to make them uncomfortable/harm them. But that might not be rare.

Good Q—the inauthentic post gets made and the algorithm suggests it to people who have engaged with similar content in the past. It resonates with people who are biased against Blake Lively so they engage with it and it gets suggested to even more people. It now has over 60,000 views.

Ever since 2022 it has felt like being stuck in a time loop of the worst thing I’ve ever seen on the internet—Depp v. Heard—over and over again. Why wouldn’t malicious actors and abusers use the same strategy? It worked and it keeps working. Because people let them get away with it every time.
