The latest Zero Pollution Monitoring & Outlook report shines a light on the European Union's fight against pollution.
Encouraging progress has been made, but there are still urgent challenges that need attention like microplastics proliferation & noise pollution.

Flailing in the Waves: How U.S. Neglect and Avian Influenza Threaten Global Pandemic Prevention I watch the merganser flailing pitifully in the surf as I look out over Long Island Sound from the deck. Important reflection from Christian Walzer @wcs.org on what the US stance on scientific cooperation means for the risk of #pandemics at the human-animal-environment interface.

Climate change aggravates bird mortality in pristine tropical forests Climate change threatens Amazon rainforest birds, with harsher dry seasons significantly affecting their survival over 27 years.

This interesting new research shows that #climatechange can negatively affect species even in the most undisturbed ecosystems. A warning sign about #climatechange's growing role as a key driver of #biodiversityloss โ–ถ๏ธ www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Wetlands connect mountains, oceans & life. On #WWD2025 we spotlight their role in preserving 40% of species. Yet, threats like dams and channelisation disrupt these ecosystems. On a more specific note, #decarbonisation alone will not be enough to achieve 'sustainable prosperity' in Europe. Without further action on #biodiversity, for example, we will lose a key ally in the fight against climate change. Yet, the report shows that progress in this area is lagging behind ๐Ÿ‘‡

In general, it is discouraging that only 21% of the #GreenDeal targets are assessed as being on track to be achieved, despite the dominant narrative that EU efforts now need to shift towards simplification, rather than implementation and (where needed) further policy action to close gaps.

This type of evidence-based amendments would *actually* reduce reporting burdens while making the legislation fit for purpose. Most of the other claims I have heard are (at best) the result of political posturing. They do little to help businesses and nothing to protect the #EuropeanGreenDeal. /end

The suggestion to focus on essential environmental metrics and prioritise disclosures relating to impact drivers, even if not directly material to a company, could help address distortions in double materiality assessments and improve the comparability and usability of reported data. 2/n

This is a clear example of the risks inherent to the reframing of the #EuropeanGreenDeal against a competitiveness narrative. Sweden begins wolf hunt as it aims to halve endangered animalโ€™s population Five entire families can be killed, totalling 30 wolves, in move campaigners say is illegal under EU law

Sweden is a huge country that would need many thousands of wolves to ensure health of its ecosystems. Reducing population to a couple of hundreds means the species will remain ecologically absent.

Worryingly, the vote signals a backtracking on the EUโ€™s own conservation successes. This could trigger further assaults on the #HabitatsDirective at a time when @ec.europa.eu is actually asking Member States to increase their ambition on #biodiversity and implement the #NatureRestorationLaw. /end

Difficult to disagree with this take on the vote on the protection status of #wolves under the #BernConvention. As many experts have emphasised, the decision is unfortunately not based on science and it does little to actually help farmers (whose challenges go far beyond wolf predation). 1/
