These are a set of samples to test fibre, colour, density and weave structure for a Detroit Electric Car.
Using an original swatch, supplied by the customer, I determined the fibre, density and weave structure. The customer wanted an authentic fabric but in a different colour scheme.
After determining the weave structure and fibre, cotton and silk, we explored some digital mock-ups based on the customers preference for a teal green to green range on a brown structure.
Anderson Carriage Company began building electric cars in 1907. In 1920, the name of the company was changed to the Detroit Electric Car Company.
Very excited to be working on reproduction upholstery fabric for a very unique antique car.
@ironcauldron.ca used those mock-ups to begin the process of dyeing the silk in our target range. The next tricky part was to see how the teal range would combine with 3 slightly different brown warps.

The tartan patterns woven: the Maple Leaf Tartan (Canada), Saskatchewan, North West Territories, Quรจbec, Ontario.
Thanks for a wonderful day weavers!! I hope everyone is able to continue their weaving journey.
The colour combinations selected by the students for their tartan shawls were quite beautiful.
An absolutely lovely group of weaving students at Eweknit today!
In a one day workshop, students learned the weaving fundamentals of treadling twill, throwing and catching a shuttle, keeping good selvedges and following a three colour pattern.

As with most upholstery fabrics, the smooth floats run longwise not width wise on the seats. Like in the original, weโre using mercerized cotton for the fibre.
In our samples, we used a commercially available colour which didnโt quite match the original swatch.
Using original upholstery swatches, we matched the weave structure which is a colour and weave on a modified plain weave structure.
This current fabric comes from a 1960s DKW Junior car from Germany.
For the final yardage, @ironcauldron.ca matched to perfection the two stripe colours: the bone white and brass yellow.

Here Mark is wearing his jacket and cap. Every link in my supply chain supports people doing extraordinary things.
The wool is expertly processed and spun at #wellingtonfibres.
Allison Brown who raises an incredible sheep breed type called #norbouillet makes this undyed tweed fabric possible.
The conclusion to a very joyful project. Purely Ontario tweed fabric made into a utilitarian jacket by Philip Sparks and a flatcap made by Deckel Caps.
Thank you Mark for supporting sustainable textiles, from the farm to garment.

The fine and lustrous Coopworth wool in this blanket was locally sourced, spun, dyed and woven right here in our Ontario Fibreshed.
These fabulous natural colours by @ironcauldron.ca were foraged from a 1 km radius from where the wool was dyed and woven.
