My junior yr of HS, I had high level D1 offers on the table and was Gatorade player of the year in NH. I felt pretty good about that, and he gave me a talk about how being content is admitting failure. It’s like quitting on your future self. I don’t know if people realize how intense pros are wired.

Growing up with an older sibling who eventually becomes an NBA champion is weird cuz when you’re kids you do not know that your butthead older brother is on a path to become a goddamn NBA player. Thought there was something wrong with me cuz I didn’t enjoy working like him at basketball.

Well, it’s generally deemed developmentally inappropriate. But, it also cuts both ways… it’s not very fun if someone just dribbles up and chucks an airball from three without a pass every possession. Encouraging the shot but after a paint touch creates desirable/fun actions for all the players.

IDC IDC You still always love to see it.

Not all of them, but I have a solid 5 players who can probably shoot 20-30% from three with oddly decent form.

And the kids don’t have to worry about hearing “don’t shoot that!” from the big adult on the sidelines.

So, instead of saying “no threes,” every kid has the green light to take one under one condition: the ball has touched the paint first. What does this result in? Players hunting paint touches, which often times ends up in layup attempts before a kick out even happens.

Dispatch from coaching youth basketball… I used to believe in a pretty strict “no threes” philosophy for 3/4 graders. I have since changed my position though. Threes are fun. Kids like chucking them, if one goes in the whole team explodes in joy.

FWIW it’s also resulting in heightened results from real, quality work. I took over a lean marketing dept that was churning out AI slop. First thing I did was put a stop to that and focused all content/ads on actual stories/people. Creative volume dropped 75%+ but MQLs/engagement/ROAS skyrocketed…

Once every 3 years or so, I will randomly sing in my head “You’ll love it at Levitz.” About 5 minutes ago, it just happened.

I will concede it’s not black and white. It’s a judgment call. But I think we should applaud the restraint NOT to dive for a ball. And yes, only save ball from out of bounds if (a) there’s an obvious teammate you can get the ball to or (b) you have enough power to chuck it to your basket area.

Overall, it more than likely puts your team in a poor position whether you succeed at getting the ball or not IMO. As a youth coach, I’m constantly combatting false hustle, dramatic efforts to create illusion of working hard.

Also, increases injury risk as you get older.

Success rate is low.

Foul risk is high.

If you succeed, you have the ball on a very bad position (on the ground).

If you don’t succeed, the other team has the ball with a significant advantage.

If the other player dives, you’re in a great defensive position for a steal by being on your feet.

Diving for a loose ball in basketball is actually not the right thing to do. Fight me.
