For example 先生 is onyomi (Chinese reading) which is usually the case when two or more kanji are strung together. When a kanji has kana at the end (known as Okurigana) like with 大きい it's pretty much always kunyomi (native Japanese reading)

Rules of thumb having lived in Japan:

- Kanji made up of several characters (including names) = Chinese pronounciation (onyomi)

- Kanji that end in kana = Japanese reading (kunyomi)

This isn't ALWAYS the case but it's often enough that knowing this helps a lot.

SAI is still pretty popular honestly and I don't think I've seen an app with nearly as good a fill tool as SAI

Shinhan markers used to be cheaper than Copic and just as good but it doesn't look like they're all that inexpensive anymore.
