Having watched the Great Waldo Pepper in tribute to Robert Redford last night I’m appreciating the illustrations! Fascinating history/stories, off or on screen!

This summer’s visits to Mt. Rainier were selective, as it wasn’t a remarkable bloom year for wildflowers due to drought conditions. Still, this gave opportunity for the tougher alpine flowers like Pink Mountain Heather to standout across the rocky terrain.

Four examples of typical submarine lava-flow morphologies, arranged clockwise by decreasing cooling rate, with me in the center showing off my new shoes today. The rate and geometry of cooling reflects things like how fast the lava is effusing from the vent, how fast it is moving across the sea bed (e.g., from slope variations), and the viscosity of the magma. We're entering the critical burn period for both the #BearGulchFire and the #MountUnderwoodFire in BC, which is burning very hot on shortwave IR imagery. Expect poor air quality near Lake Cushman and as far south as Shelton. Moderate AQI is possible around Puget Sound this evening. #wawx #wawildfire

The annual Perseid Meteor Shower will peak overnight tonight. While the waning moon could drown out some of the dimmer meteors, there hopefully will be some brighter ones shining through! The best time for viewing is after 11pm, looking northeast away from city lights. Happy meteor hunting!
