Small brass butterfly.

The underside of the butterfly, which has little pockets to store sewing needle packets. The underside of the wings are decorated with two plates. One carries an inscription of the drapers company: "Copestake, Moore, Crampton & Co. - London." The other has a gilded head of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, art, trade, and war.

The butterfly can be folded up, like how a butterfly flaps its wings.

Beautiful 1860s Victorian butterfly, which was used to store small packets of sewing needles on the underside of the wings. This was a collaboration between a London-based drapers company and a sewing needle manufacturer. On exhibit at Tatter Blue, a Brooklyn textile museum.

This industry is hurting right now, but I’m not going anywhere. I’m staying not out of spite, but out of love and, above all, hope. Here’s to the next 10 years 💖

I’ve kept going because I love what I do. I love connecting with people through the characters I write and the stories I’ve had a hand in creating. Making players laugh and cry, making them feel seen.

Although this career hasn’t been easy, I’ve kept going because of the many wonderful people I’ve met along the way. The mentors who saw something in me, the colleagues who became dear friends, and the engineer who became my husband.

I remember hearing a statistic that the average career for a woman in games was ~5 years and I vowed to outlast that if only out of spite. Turns out I didn’t really need spite!

Back when I started, gamergate was still fresh on everyone’s minds, and AAA titles announcing female protagonists were a big deal (lmao). The more things changes, the more they stay the same. 🤷‍♀️

I don’t even know what I’d say to my 23-year-old self, a girl whose first modern console was the Destiny launch PS4 bundle, who had no idea what the game would mean to her later in life. But man, am I so proud of her.
