They've replaced one of the locks on the crypt door at St. Mary's, but they still keep finding it open. I don't know if it's down to a ghost whose good at lock picking or someone morbid with a skeleton key, either way it makes me nervous every time I walk passed. – Annabel Growcott #VOH

You know that as possessed by the soul of an Edwardian gentleman, there’s never any hope of Photoshop.

The bottom of the steps of the Ashcourt Docks foot tunnel is ghost anticipation. You try to remember at which of 126 steps you're meant to hear someone invisible climbing just behind you. The number 34 comes to mind and despite yourself, an unwanted countdown to haunting begins. – #MattAdams, 1982

The 2006 adaptation is worth a view and Spall as Rochester is interesting. Quite fond of the 10-part radio adaptation.

The weakness is key. Just wonderfully brought to life.

I think one thing I always want from an adaptation is for the possibility of a β€˜Wide Sargasso Sea’ happening off screen and because it is Dalton, I wasn’t able to do that.

Me too. And he doesn’t disappoint in many respects , but you can’t have a walking-swoon Rochester can you?

I think one of the worst Rochesters due to this is Dalton. It is a long and faithful adaptation, but having Dalton as Rochester skews everything.

Hinds is also good at manifesting the structural boundaries of the relationship from the time and economic inequality. You always have a sense of it is about them and the them as it is lensed through societal norms.

Agreed. Scott as Rochester works largely because he is so clearly not an object of desire. The 2006 adaptation also works strongly partly m as it refuses to make him desirable. Fassbender makes it work within the confines despite that trap, when he delivers Rochester as a damaged, unpleasant man.

You too Peigi. Goodnight:

This is why I don’t think Fassbender is up there is with Hayes and Toby, it is such a different take on the story. You can’t give a bad take on Rochester from what is there, but when you compare to the NT and 2006, those are clearly superior Rochesters.

He does so much despite not being given the best take. Fassbender is superb, but it’s such a strong, different adaptation that I doubt anyone could have fumbled it.

Often the limitations of the adaptation mean you get shockingly poor takes on Rochester. Toby and Hayes stand out for me, but among the memorable, but constrained by awful adaptation, Macnee’s Rochester is definitely worth watching.

Toby Stephens is brilliant, Felix Hayes is brilliant. The best creepy, leery and alcoholic Rochester is Patrick Macnee.

Goodnight from Frank Wetherley, following summer’s last glow-worms through chalk meadows in hope they’ll lead to the hedge gap between worlds. Goodnight from Claire Hunter, falling into the land’s slow, but angry dreams of revenge for its axe-stolen forests. Goodnight from Hookland.
