Cambridge council votes to lower 2026 tax levy to 2.44% Next step is a ten-day veto period where the mayor may choose to veto any amendments, followed by a fifteen-day period where council may override any veto with a two-third vote.

The biggest discussion of the night was Shwery's amendment to use $2.4 million from the tax rate stabilization reserve to reduce the 2026 tax levy. "My proposal is an exception during difficult financial conditions, not a new standard practice" and said that using the reserve this year "reflects that principle," she said. Staff warned council that using the reserve this way would create problems next year. Staff further explained that this reserve is meant for one-time costs and that using it to lower the tax rate now "is quite certain to create a burden on these same taxpayers in 2027.'" Councillor Ross Earnshaw attempted to amend Shwery's amendment so that only one-time costs would be covered. His amendment was defeated seven to two. Council then voted on Shwery's original amendment, which passed six to three.

Where would he find funding for the refunds? That would be quite a lot of lost revenue.

And if there won’t be any lost revenue due to increased reliability, where will he find funding for those infra/service improvements?

He’s also against bus and streetcar lanes so this, again, is all posturing

This year there’s an upcoming municipal election so they ordered departments to prioritize “affordability” (to the taxpayer) from the outset. Council is aiming for below 5% increase, with some wanted to go even down to 3%. (2/2)

There’s humongous pressure to open. This line is multiple years delayed and the agency has another line that is 15+ years under construction. They need to open something soon.

The slow zones may be a policy choice here to stay out of an abundance of caution, which is all I can say.

Yup. City of Toronto is really car centric. Prioritizes left turning single occupancy vehicles over trains with 100+ people. Something @ttcriders.bsky.social has been advocating for!

It’s within its capabilities to be faster, with signal priority and getting rid of some of the speed restrictions. Just needs to be worked out by transportation staff if they’re willing to.

It’s remnant of Mayor David Miller’s transit city plan, which blankets the entire city in LRT. This was during a time when subway construction costs were going thru the rough and the city was looking for ways of building more transit infrastructure cheaply across larger distances.

That area of the city is “equity deserving” and has been underserved for a while, with a promise of higher order transit.

The city wanted to build something nice in the area for economic revitalization. Also it’s one of the busiest bus routes so it gets pretty crowded. LRT offers the capacity

All door, proof of payment, just like the streetcars, unless it’s at the terminal station where you have to enter fare gates.

Learning that GRT route 9 is already extremely unreliable. Further cuts to this route will only deteriorate service further.
