I obviously agree that cities need to raise property taxes to adequately fund things, but I think the distinction is important that Feds/prov have much more robust tools like sales/income tax that brings in much more revenue, while they have also downloaded responsibilities to municipalities.

During big capital project openings, we still have to remember the chronic operational budget shortfalls transit agencies face.

Imagine if all the frustration & coverage over Eglintonโ€™s delays/opening went into funding operations. That would make Eglinton *and* the rest of the transit system better

From the TTC Chair
Dear TTC riders,
Any time we expand transit in this city, it matters. People have waited a long time for Line 5, and I know there's real excitement - and real expectations - around this opening.
After the Line 6 launch, I successfully passed a motion to strengthen transit signal priority because speed and reliability are what riders care about most. Those lessons are shaping how we're opening Line 5, improving Line 6 and our streetcars.
Line 5 is faster by design. Nearly two-thirds of the line runs underground, which means fewer delays from traffic and signals and more consistent travel times.
Opening in phases lets us do this the right way - apply what we've learned, watch how the system performs in real-world conditions, and make adjustments before full service. My focus as Chair is simple: start strong, keep improving, and deliver a line riders can rely on every day.
As service builds, we'll keep sharing updates on performance, speed, and reliability - because riders deserve clear information and a system that keeps getting better.
