Some bon-Danish colleagues yesterday were talking about how strange it is on Denmark that you can always see he horizon, there are no mountains in the background really. That's definitely only partly true, but on the other hand we have incredible clouds.

Especially, the sea ice around the Antarctic Peninsula, and in the King Haakon VII sea, shows large areas of negative anomaly (red colour). Source data is OSI SAF sea-ice concentration CDR v3.0.
The line graph displays the monthly sea-ice extent in the Antarctic for July from 1979 to 2025. In 2025, the July extent ranked as the third lowest on record. Source data is OSI SAF sea-ice index.
Disregarding the extreme and record-low sea-ice extent in Antarctic the last two years, this year's July extent is exceptionally low, ranking as the 3rd lowest on record.
The July extent over the last four years differs significantly from that of the previous four decades.

New status on OSISAF Sea Ice Index.
With the continuation of SSMIS data distribution, the sea-ice index v2.2 (based on SSMIS) will continue as usual.
The newly implemented branch providing a calibrated AMSR-based index will be monitored and work as a backup.

In July 2025, the #SeaIce global extent was 8.9% below 1991-2020 mean. Since the beginning of records (1978):
- #Arctic, 4th lowest monthly mean, with 9.9% less extent (-906.931 kmยฒ)
- #Antarctic, 3rd lowest monthly mean, 8.3% less exent (-1.363.243 kmยฒ)

Forecast 2-m temperatures today in Finland, based on the MEPS regional model.
20 straight days with 30 ยฐC in Finland! Truly unprecedented heatwave still in full swing with maximum today about 32-33 degrees.
Even the Arctic regions (e.g. Sodankylรค Tรคhtelรค) have seen three weeks above 25 ยฐC, and may rival tomorrow their August heat records.

How do we at @osi-saf.eumetsat.int prepare the Sea-Ice Index for the potential End-of-Life of SSMIS after July?
1. Compute indexes from AMSR-2 instead
2. Develop a calibration tuned over 2021-2025
3. Continue the index time series with calibrated AMSR-based indexes from August 2025.

A large polynya has developed northeast of Greenland.
This is clearly visible in the new AMSR-based sea-ice concentration product (OSI-438), but is less visible in the SSMIS-based product (OSI-430) due to its lower spatial resolution.
