We owe it to every victim of Jeffrey Epstein to better protect women and girls in Britain. And we will | Jess Phillips I am furious that women and children have to endure a crisis like this for progress to become politically possible. But I will seize this moment * Jess Phillips MP is parliamentary under-secretary of state for safeguarding and violence against women and girls * Jess Phillips calls for Epstein files to be catalyst for long-term legislative change It always takes a calamity – a dreadful murder that reaches every front page, a mass paedophile ring being uncovered, or a political scandal unfolding – to make institutions sit up and act on violence against women and children. These windows of potential energy are never wasted by women’s rights activists. Historically, they have used them to build the #MeToo movement, to fight for legislation change and to push for greater resources for victims. I’ve done it, many times – β€œnever waste a crisis” is my mantra. In the past few weeks, while the nation’s attention has been on the political fallout from the Epstein files, I have seen the opportunity to push for more, for better. To move beyond the throwaway line about the victims being the most important thing – and to actually make them just that. Deeds not words are what matter. If repentance and sorrow is all we achieve out of the courage of the Epstein victims, we will have failed; change is all that will suffice. Jess Phillips is MP for Birmingham Yardley and parliamentary under-secretary of state for safeguarding and violence against women and girls Do you have an opinion on the issues raised in this article? New ADHD Medication That Targets Serotonin - Centanafadine Explained
This video explains centanafadine, a new non-stimulant ADHD medication that targets norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin β€” and why that third pathway may matter for real-world ADHD. In this episode, Dr Sanil Rege explores why ADHD may be better understood as a disorder of regulation β€” not just attention β€” and how centanafadine’s triple reuptake inhibition (ND-SRI) mechanism attempts to address attention, impulse control, emotional reactivity, and sleep instability. Upholding trans children’s rights Trans children have rights under international and domestic law, and we can be more assertive both in calling attention to rights violations, and in demanding institutions uphold these rights in policy and practice. Losing a pet can be as painful as any other bereavement – but there are some differences | Ahona Guha Our world is not set up to honour the bond between pet and human, but we can reduce expectations of ourselves as we grieve * The modern mind is a column where experts discuss mental health issues they are seeing in their work Last week, I sat in the emergency department of a veterinary hospital for hours with my 12-year-old greyhound, Karla. She’d woken screaming in severe pain, so we went to the emergency department after consulting a home visiting veterinarian. The vet recommended we admit Karla for X-rays to see if the pain was caused by osteosarcoma – a common and deadly cancerexperienced by greyhounds. As we waited, I saw a weeping family, their golden retriever lying preternaturally still on a bed in a consulting room. Their sobs were guttural; I knew what had happened. I looked at social media to distract myself and saw a post from Nagi, talking about her beloved dog Dozer’s illness, and felt a sense of connection, but also devastatingly alone in the bond between my dog and me, and the decisions I would need to make about her. Facing meltdown? Over 75% of people suffer from burnout - here’s what you need to know Does it only affect weak people? Is work always the cause? Burnout myths, busted by the experts Once, after surviving yet another round of redundancies in a former job, I did something very odd. IΒ turned off the lights in my room and lay face-down on the bed, unable to move. Rather than feeling relief at having escaped the axe, I was exhausted and numb. I’m not the only one. Fatigue, apathy and hopelessness are all textbook signs of burnout, a bleak phenomenon that has come to define many of our working lives. In 2025, a report from Moodle found that 66% of US workers had experienced some kind of burnout, while a Mental Health UK survey found that one in three adults came under high levels of pressure or stress in the previous year. Despite the prevalence of burnout, plenty of misconceptions around it persist. β€œEverybody thinks it’s some sort of disease or medical condition,” says Christina Maslach, the psychology professor who was the firstΒ to study the syndrome in the 1970s. β€œBut it’s actually a response to chronic job stressors – a stress response.” Here we separate the facts from the myths. β€˜You think: Do I really need anyone?’ – the hidden burden of being a hyper-independent person Self-reliance is often encouraged over asking others for help in the modern world. But doing everything yourself can be a sign that you are scared of intimacy When a relative was seriously ill and in intensive care for more than a month, Cianne Jones stepped in. β€œI took it upon myself to be that person in the hospital every single day – chasing doctors, taking notes, making sure I understood why they were doing things.” It was so stressful, she says, that at one point her hair started falling out, but she ploughed on. It was Jones’s therapist who gently questioned whether she was going to ask for help. Jones laughs. β€œThe hair falling out didn’t suggest to me that I needed help, it was somebody else looking in and saying that.” She has a large, close family who would have helped immediately – and did, once Jones asked – it’s just that it didn’t occur to her to ask. β€œI had taken that role on: β€˜I’m just going to get everything done.’ I just took off, and that was it.” Continue reading...

ADHD 101: It's NOT an Attention Disorder
ADHD is often misunderstood as a simple lack of attention, but that label misses the real picture. ADHD is not about being unable to focus. It is about difficulty regulating attention. People with ADHD can focus deeply on things that interest them, sometimes to the point of hyperfocus, while struggling to engage with tasks that feel boring, repetitive, or overwhelming. This happens because ADHD affects executive functions like motivation, emotional regulation, time awareness, and impulse control. It is a brain-based difference, not a character flaw or a discipline problem. Understanding ADHD this way helps replace shame with clarity. When you stop seeing it as an attention deficit and start seeing it as an attention regulation challenge, better strategies, support, and self-compassion naturally follow. ADHD 101: It's NOT an Attention Disorder ADHD is one of the most misunderstood diagnoses in mental health β€” not because people dismiss it, but because it’s usually explained the wrong way. 🚨 🧠 For all things mental health from Dr. Sulman Aziz Mirza πŸ‘‰πŸΌ https://linktr.ee/sulmanazizmirzamd 🚨😴 Trouble sleeping? In this video, psychiatrist Dr. Sulman Aziz Mirza explains what ADHD actually is, why it feels like laziness or low motivation, and how executive dysfunction drives the real symptoms adults struggle with. We break down how ADHD affects executive functioning β€” including time regulation, task initiation, impulse control, emotional regulation, and attention regulation β€” and why shame and self-blame are such common outcomes. We also explain hyperfocus, why β€œtrying harder” doesn’t work, and how ADHD is often confused with anxiety, depression, sleep deprivation, or autism traits. You’ll learn what actually helps ADHD: external supports, systems that reduce friction, and when medication may improve access to regulation. This video is educational, evidence-based, and focused on adults who want clarity without moral judgment. When Does Pharmacotherapy Supersede Psychotherapy? Psychiatrist Explains
Antonio Damasio, a renowned neuroscientist, describes psychotherapists as "amygdala whisperers," acknowledging the power of talk therapy (psychotherapy) to soothe the brain's emotional center. However, when the amygdala stops whispering and starts "screaming," clinical reality dictates that psychological interventions alone may no longer be enough to reach the patient, requiring a shift toward biological elements such as targeted pharmacological treatments. In this short video, Dr Sanil Rege, a psychiatrist, explains the critical importance of biological elements when psychotherapy reaches its limits. #Psychiatry #Neuroscience #MentalHealth When Does Pharmacotherapy Supersede Psychotherapy? Don’t Start Family Court Until You Watch This
In Episode 6 of Dear Divorce Diaries, Darren β€œDaz” Mort and Joplin β€œJop” Higgins dive into a topic that is often misunderstood and frequently misused in family law β€” trauma-informed practice. Daz & Jop explain why this term is not just a trendy buzzword, and why many lawyers and judicial officers may not truly understand what it means in practice. Joplin, a recognised expert in the field and author of a book on trauma-informed practice, explains how lawyers and courts must ensure they do not re-traumatise clients during the legal process. The episode explores the practical application of trauma-informed approaches in family law. Joplin describes strategies used in her firm to create a safe environment, including: weighted blankets and heat packs stress balls massage chairs structured communication strategies (urgent vs non-urgent emails) pre-conference forms to avoid repeatedly asking clients to recount traumatic incidents They discuss how domestic violence and coercive behaviour are present in many family law cases, and why it’s essential to handle information sensitively. The hosts also highlight how the legal process can unintentionally cause ongoing trauma, especially when clients are repeatedly asked to relive painful events. Darren highlights the court’s trauma-informed initiatives, including the court dog program, which supports parties and children through the process. They also discuss the need for lawyers to be aware of clients’ capacity to give instructions, and how trauma can affect memory and communication. Joplin emphasises that trauma-informed practice is not just about empathy β€” it is about creating safety, stability, and clarity so clients can participate effectively in their case. The episode ends with a powerful reminder that trauma-informed practice is a professional responsibility, not a marketing term, and clients should expect it from their family lawyer. Key Topics Covered: What β€œtrauma-informed practice” actually means Why it’s not just a buzzword How legal processes can re-traumatise clients Practical strategies in law firms to reduce stress Why communication strategy matters (urgent vs non-urgent) How domestic violence and coercive behaviour impact cases Court initiatives like the therapy dog program The importance of safe client environments Trauma’s impact on clients’ capacity to give instructions Why trauma-informed practice is essential in family law Why This Episode Matters Whether someone is just contemplating separation or deep into negotiations, this episode offers a grounded, compassionate look at what the process actually feels like β€” beyond forms and courtrooms. The blend of legal insight and emotional awareness helps listeners feel equipped, not overwhelmed, by the road ahead. And because no two separations look the same, you can be part of the conversation. Listeners are invited to submit their questions for Daz & Jop, with future episodes dedicated to answering real experiences, real challenges and real concerns from the people who need guidance most. Whether you’re contemplating separation, navigating court, co-parenting, or simply trying to put your children first through the uncertainty β€” The Dear Divorce Diary Podcast offers steady, professional guidance to help reshape the path ahead. Real law. Real families. Real conversations. Subscribe, listen, learn β€” and know that you’re not alone. Don’t Start Family Court Until You Watch This

When it comes to mental health labels, we need to tread lightly | Letters Readers respond to a long read article by Gavin Francis in which he voices concern that current approaches to labelling and diagnosis may be doing more harm than good Thank you, Gavin Francis, for your long read (β€˜What I see in clinic is never a set of labels’: are we in danger of overdiagnosing mental illness?, 10 February). It powerfully captures some of the traps modern psychiatry finds itself in and beautifully describes the all-important – and indeed, threatened – relationship at the heart of any good doctor’s practice. I have been a psychiatrist and psychotherapist for over 40Β years and would like to make two points about the β€œepidemic” of mental illness now upon us. First, there is a mass of evidence that shows mental ill-being, suffering and disturbance, at all degrees of severity, are affected by the level of inequality in society and by social hardship such as poverty, violence and discrimination. Between them, this explains some of the increaseΒ we are seeing. Continue reading...
