If there wasn't enough proof that we're living in the twilight zone, Varigence just announced a Biml update for SSIS 2022. After 6 years of absolute silence...can't make this stuff up.

I use it at times, when customers want to take shortcuts instead of doing due diligence...that's the only times I use it though, and think there needs to be some level of trust between the two parties first before that phrase will have any effect.

Ah, now I remember the good old days when we were endorsing each other for bogus skills like ping-pong :-)

I prefer the term "generally accepted good practices" these days. Agree with you though, there isn't good, better or best. There is only what's best for your given scenario and environment, and even that is debatable sometimes.

Forget about best practices (I don't like that term), but even just good practices would do :-)

I particularly like the fact that cells with nulls now have a different color in the results :-)

Such a sad state of affairs.

And I get it, they had to let go of the community tools in favor of their paid products...but the way they went about it alienated them from the same community who helped them be successful :-/

Not disputing that at all...I definitely think there's something there for other customers, but I cannot promote Fabric to most of my customers with a clear conscience right now.

On the other hand, I feel like Microsoft is alienating these smaller customers because there's very little effort being put into the stuff they really use and care about...Azure Data Factory, Power BI visuals, etc.

It's not just the operational costs though. It's the cost of refactoring code, etc. for very little benefit.

These customers aren't pushing the limits of what the relational database can provide, so there's just not enough upside for them in the new "modern data warehouse" world.

I have customers at the lowest level of Azure SQL, and all in (excluding Power BI licenses) we're talking about ~$400/month...maybe even a little less.

In this case, I'm afraid Microsoft is risking losing both the trust of the enterprise customers as well as the smaller companies. My opinion only.

Fabric is too expensive for smaller companies, and as a consultant in that space I'm in the middle. Can't promote a product to the smaller guys because of the cost, and can't promote the product to the bigger companies unless they are aware and ok with the limitations.

I'll give you my take: IMHO it was a mistake to target enterprise customers while Fabric was missing so many enterprise-ready features.

Yes, I think everyone of us in the analytics field is screaming into that same void with you. I think data governance will make a resurgence, but not before we get over the AI hype cycle and many folks learn some very expensive lessons :-/

Couldn't agree more. I think the better solution would be for AI generate these answers from a semantic model, and not necessarily the code (SQL, Dax, etc.) to query the (somewhat) raw sources yourself.

The reality is that most companies suck at generating and storing good metadata...

I think we should expand the "It's always DNS" with "It's always DNS, or data types" :-)

The syntax is a bit of a learning curve for me so far :-/

I think you can get them with USB-C now. I've seen some weirdness with other Bluetooth devices paired to multiple machines or phones. Never had the same while using the dedicated channel.

Do you have the Logitech Unifying Receiver? That's the only other thing I can think of to help resolve Bluetooth connectivity issues.
